Gareth Bale has been included in Real Madrid’s squad for Saturday’s visit from Real Sociedad. It’s the first time Bale has appeared in a squad list since the 4-2 win over Granada in Week 8 which was also his last taste of first team action for Madrid. It’s unlikely that Bale will start against La Real but if he does get a run-out during the game, it will be interesting to see what kind of reception he gets from the Bernabéu in the wake of his mid-week Euro 2020-here-we-come celebrations alongside his Wales team mates and a customised Welsh flag. He hasn’t been punished by the club for it though and judging by the images from this morning’s training session, at least his club team mates have seen the funny side.

Bale’s return will be welcomed as Lucas Vázquez is out for the next month after fracturing his toe. Madrid’s only other absentees are long-term casualties Nacho and Asensio and Vinicius, who has strangely been left out of Zidane’s 19-man squad - technical decision was given as the reason why.

Like Madrid, Real Sociedad’s internationals all returned home safe and injury free from the recent FIFA break and they go into the game at full strength. The mood in San Sebastián is equally upbeat and has been for some time now – Imanol Alguacil’s team have looked solid and brimming with confidence since the season started and on top of that have been playing attractive, attacking football. Only Asier Illarramendi, who is close to returning from an ankle injury, misses out. Former madridistas Diego Llorente and Willian José, together with Real Madrid loanee Martin Ødegaard are in the list and will be looking forward to this opportunity to take on their old team mates at the Bernabéu.

While historically this fixture has favoured the home side, Real Sociedad did do the double over the home side last season – winning 0-2 in January this year and 3-1 in the return fixture in Donosti. Comfortably placed in fifth on 23 points, the Donostiarras could leapfrog Madrid in the table if they get a similar result this weekend - one they will be going all out to achieve, Alguacil said on the eve of the game, while admitting that "at the Bernabéu, every team, whatever they do, is going to suffer".
