ATLÉTICO MADRID

Cavani to Atlético Madrid: PSG name their price

Diego Simeone is in desperate need of goals and the experienced Uruguayan was initially deemed too expensive, a position that may have changed.

Atlético Madrid broke the bank to bring in young Portuguese star João Félix in the summer, but goals were expected to come from numerous sources as the creativity in the team increased. Diego Simeone now knows, however, that despite having had the likes of Diego Costa and Álvaro Morata to call upon this season, troubling the opposition's net has been a major problem, with only 20 goals thus far in LaLiga.

Cavani's on-off Atlético move

Across at Paris Saint-Germain, scoring goals has been a much simpler proposition. Mauro Icardi joined the attacking threat of Neymar, Kylian Mbappé, Edinson Cavani and Ángel di Maria, and defences across France, and beyond, have struggled to contain them. This over-abundance in forwards saw talk grow of a move away from Paris for the Uruguayan, who has not agreed a new deal there, and the rojiblancos have been strongly linked with him. Cavani has even been said to have agreed personal terms.

Early reports suggested that the finances behind a January 2020 move were going to exclude Atleti from the reckoning - given that they are currently running at their maximum LaLiga wage limit - but this situation may have changed.

According to reports in Le Parisien on Tuesday, representatives of both clubs, Andrea Berta and Leonardo, have already spoken, and that a transfer fee of 10 million euros would be enough to secure the move. This is certainly within the available budget for the Spanish club, although for his salary demands to be met, others would need to leave to balance the books.

With ambitions of another LaLiga title not yet extinguished, and a tricky Champions League tie against Liverpool just weeks away, more fire-power is deemed necessary. An injured Costa will not be back until February and so everything suggests a new face will be added to the squad. Whether that's Cavani is still unclear.
