Copa del Rey draw: 2019/20 last-16 pairings revealed

Update:
Copa del Rey draw: 2019/20 last-16 pairings revealed

Copa del Rey last-16 draw as it happened

2019/20 Copa del Rey last-16 draw in full:

Badajoz vs Granada
Cultural Leonesa vs Valencia
Tenerife vs Athletic Bilbao
Real Zaragoza vs Real Madrid
Mirandés vs Sevilla
Rayo Vallecano vs Villarreal
Barcelona vs Leganés
Real Sociedad vs Osasuna

The last-16 ties are to be played in single-match format on Tuesday 28, Wednesday 29 and Thursday 30 January; confirmation of the exact day and time of each clash should be out in the next few hours.

The quarter-finals are then scheduled for the week after - it really is quite the Copa frenzy right now - so don't forget to join us next Friday lunchtime for the last-eight draw!

That's all from me - thanks for reading!

The two all-Primera last-16 ties are:

Barcelona vs Leganés

Real Sociedad vs Osasuna

And that concludes the draw!

Euro 2008-winning former Spain international Marcos Senna, now a director at Villarreal, comes on to the stage to draw the two all-Primera ties.

A reminder that the home side in these clashes is simply first team out of the hat.

The Segunda vs Primera last-16 ties are:

Tenerife vs Athletic Bilbao

Real Zaragoza vs Real Madrid

Mirandés vs Sevilla

Rayo Vallecano vs Villarreal

Real Madrid go to the Romareda in a repeat of the 2004 final!

Now for the four Segunda vs Primera ties...

The two Segunda B vs Primera ties are...

Badajoz vs Granada

Cultural Leonesa vs Valencia

Having ousted Atlético Madrid to set up their first Copa last-16 appearance since 1960, Cultural get the holders!

Now for the Copa del Rey last-16 draw

With that somewhat chaotic draw out of the way, we move on to the Copa del Rey. A reminder that the teams in the last-16 hat are:

Primera División: Athletic Bilbao, Barcelona, Granada, Leganés, Osasuna, Real Madrid, Real Sociedad, Sevilla, Valencia, Villarreal

Segunda División: Mirandés, Rayo Vallecano, Real Zaragoza, Tenerife

Segunda División B: Badajoz, Cultural Leonesa

First, the Segunda B sides will both be paired with a club from Primera, before the four Segunda teams are also given a tie with a top-flight club. After that, two all-Primera ties will be pulled out of the hat.

Copa de la Reina last-16 draw in full

The eight away sides are then plucked out of the hat, leaving us with the following last-16 ties in the 2019/20 Copa de la Reina.

Athletic Club vs Tenerife Egatesa
CD Tacón vs Rayo Vallecano
Sporting Club Huelva vs Barcelona
Sevilla vs Levante UD
Real Sociedad vs Madrid CFF
Espanyol vs CDEF Logroño
Deportivo Abanca vs Valencia Féminas
Real Betis vs Atlético Madrid

Those ties will be played - in single-match format, like the Copa del Rey - on Tuesday 11 and Wednesday 12 February.

Unlike the Copa del Rey, the Copa de la Reina draw sees the eight home sides in each last-16 tie drawn out of the hat first.

The drawmasters manage to get themselves in all sorts of trouble, picking nine home clubs rather than eight... but we're finally left with the following home sides.

CD Tacón
Athletic Club
Sporting Club Huelva
Sevilla
Real Sociedad
Deportivo Abanca
Betis
Espanyol

Draw time in Madrid...

The draw ceremony is now underway at RFEF HQ. Before the last-16 pairings are revealed in the Copa del Rey, we've got the draw for the same stage of the Copa de la Reina, the major domestic cup competition in Spain's women's game.

Last-16 draw: how and where to watch

If you're keen to watch the draw and are wondering how, I recommend you avail yourself of this useful guide answering that very question.

Draw

How does the draw work?

As has been the case all the way through the competition, the draw will seek to pair lower-league clubs with top-tier sides, so the six Segunda and Segunda B outfits are all guaranteed a tie with a Primera club.

As ever, the lower-league club will be at home.

Once the six Segunda and Segunda B sides have come out of the hat, the four remaining Primera clubs will be drawn together for the two final ties.

Who's in the last-16 draw?

After all that, we're left with a last 16 comprising 10 clubs from Primera (eight top-flight sides have succumbed to lower-league opposition so far in the Copa) four from Segunda and two from Segunda B.

The teams in the hat are:

Primera División: Athletic Bilbao, Barcelona, Granada, Leganés, Osasuna, Real Madrid, Real Sociedad, Sevilla, Valencia, Villarreal

Segunda División: Mirandés, Rayo Vallecano, Real Zaragoza, Tenerife

Segunda División B: Badajoz, Cultural Leonesa

Real Madrid Salamanca

Madrid defeat spirited Salamanca

Meanwhile, Real Madrid had a slightly better time of it in Salamanca, but the 3-1 scoreline nevertheless failed to tell the whole story of a tie in which the hosts put up quite a fight against their big-name visitors.

Griezmann

Setién's side survive scare

In Quique Setién's second game in charge, Barça trailed for an hour and flirted dangerously with a major cup upset at Estadi Can Misses, before two late Antoine Griezmann goals - the second in time added on - rescued the Blaugrana from embarrassment.

Ibiza Barcelona

Madrid and Barça edge through last-16 ties

Barcelona and Real Madrid both negotiated their third-round ties against Ibiza and Unionistas Salamanca, respectively, but neither had it their own way - particularly the Catalans...

Rayo

Badajoz also beat the big boys as four Segunda sides go through

Cultural's fellow third-tier side Badajoz likewise upset the odds against Primera División opposition, ousting Eibar with a 3-1 victory on Thursday, while there were also wins over top-flight sides for Segunda clubs Mirandés, Tenerife, Rayo Vallecano and Real Zaragoza.

Cultural defeat Atleti

Cultural shock for Atleti

The top story, of course, is Cultural Leonesa's shock victory over LaLiga big boys Atlético Madrid. The Segunda B side stunned Diego Simeone's men at the Reino de León on Thursday night, coming from behind to win 2-1 after extra time, thanks to goals by Julen Castañeda and Sergio Benito.

Badajoz beat Eibar

Several top-flight sides downed in third round

Without the cushion of a second leg in which to get themselves out of jail, no fewer than six top-flight sides fell to lower-league clubs in the last 32 - and there were others that may have got through, but not without being given a real run for their money.

Draw

Copa del Rey draw: bienvenidos

Good afternoon!

At 13:00 CET, so in about an hour's time, we're going to be finding out who'll be facing who in the Copa del Rey last 16, after a thoroughly entertaining third round that was a clear vindication of this season's move to single-match ties.
