Messi breaks his post-World Cup silence
The Argentine star spoke after losing the World Cup final to Spain, posting a message on social media.
Lionel Messi has broken his silence following Argentina’s defeat to Spain in the 2026 World Cup final. Despite astonishing the football world by remaining one of the game’s most decisive players at the age of 39, the Argentine captain was unable to inspire his side against a superior Spanish team and ended the tournament on the losing side.
On Monday, Messi addressed fans on social media, admitting the pain of falling short in another World Cup final while acknowledging Spain’s achievement.
“The pain is immense, and it will take time for this wound to heal. But I also choose to remember everything that was good. I’ll remember the matches we fought back in, giving everything we had, and that will stay with us forever. I’ll remember the support of an entire country, which, together with the hard work and dedication of this group, helped us return, once again, to being among the best teams in the world. Right now, it’s difficult to appreciate what we achieved, but this group reached two consecutive World Cup finals.”
The Inter Miami star also thanked Argentina’s supporters for standing behind the team throughout the tournament.
“Thank you from the bottom of my heart for every message and every word of support. Once again, we managed to come together as a country, united by the immense pride of being Argentine.”
Messi suffered the heartbreak of losing his second World Cup final after Argentina pushed the match into extra time. Often forced to drop deep to help build attacks, he spent much of the game away from Spain’s penalty area. After Ferran’s decisive goal, Messi led Argentina’s final push for an equaliser, but this time he could not produce the magic that had carried his team against Cape Verde, Egypt, Switzerland and England earlier in the tournament.
He ended his message by congratulating the new world champions.
“I also want to congratulate Spain on winning the championship.”
The biggest question now is whether Messi will continue representing Argentina and, if so, for how long. Even at 39, he remains the team’s most influential player, and his decision will shape the Albiceleste’s immediate future.
In many ways, Lionel Scaloni’s future also appears closely linked to Messi’s. The captain’s next move will depend on how much motivation and competitive drive he still feels after this painful defeat. With the 2028 Copa América set to be held in the United States, there is still reason to believe Messi’s final chapter with Argentina has yet to be written.
