Real Sociedad come out on top in Copa classic at the Bernabéu
Real Madrid 3-4 Real Sociedad: as it happened
And here's Isak, who points out to the pitch side reporter that he scored two, not the three she congratulated him for. But he's obviously very happy to have knocked out Real Madrid and says La Real had to be at their best to win and that they deserved it.
That was the first time under Zinedine Zidane that Real Madrid have conceded four goals in a game. Marcelo admits it was diffilcult to come back from but that Madrid gave it their all in the second half.
La Real celebrate like mad in the centre circle and with their fans. What a performance.
So we have Real Sociedad, Granada and Mirandés in the Copa del Rey semi-finals!
And, incidentally, justification for doing away with the two-legged system.
And that's it! What a cracking game of football! A classic cup encounter!
Remiro taking his time here....
Ramos! Saved! Marcelo with the cross! What a game!
One last charge from Madrid...!
Remiro gratefully smothers a cross and La Real breathe...
Marcelo skins a defender and pings in a cross, La Real desperately clear!
Vinicius made a bit of a meal of that but the La Real defender can't complain too hard. La Real down to 10, one andf half minutes left...!
Gorosabel off!
Absolute mayhem now as Real stand on the halfway line like a boxer waiting to land the final blow! Can La Real hold on?
It stands!
A good old-fashioned bit of ping-ping in the area and, wait...
Real knocking on the door, corner...
Not sure where Mateu Lahoz found those but they'll be nervy ones for la Real, who have run themselves into the floor this evening.
Six minutes added!
Modric! The Croatian unleashes a thunderbolt and Le Normand takes the full force of it plum in the face. That's taking one for the team right there.
Lovely footwork from Vinicius, who tries a hollywood ball to Benzema but it's cut out by the La Real backline.
La Real buy themselves some breathing space as they finally get the ball up the other end. No hurry to take this throw, which goes into the corner flag area.
Militão! The Brazilian nods over from Vinicius' delivery. It's all Real Madrid at the moment...
Gorosabel into the book for a chop on Vinicius. He doesn't complain.
Real Madrid throwing the kitchen sink at it now... Benzema hurls himself at a hail mary and manages to find Ramos, who heads over from close range.
Vinicius buys a yard and lets fly but his shot is blocked.
This, it is safe to say, has already become a modern Copa classic! Seven minutes left! It's all to play for and the way the game has gone anything can happen....
Not given! It's 4-2 again!
Vinicius turns provider and tees up his compatriot for a tap-in!
And he's offside! The Bernabéu can't believe it! We're back to 4-1!
Well, well. Hay partido! The Brazilian nods home at the far post to reduce the defict to two with just over 10 minutes on the clock!
Every time La Real get the ball they're looking to break now. They want more! They're thoroughly enjoying this and deservedly so.
Yellow for Militão as he floors Barrenetxea, whose flick had taken him around the Brazilian and left him contemplating nothing but grass between him and the goal.
Zidane rolls the dice with Rodrygo and Jovic. Valverde and Brahim off.
15 minutes left for Madrid to find a way back into this. It will go down as one of the all-time great comebacks if they can but La Real have been well worth this stunning lead.
Remiro! Another fine save from the Sociedad keeper from Valverde's piledriver.
Militão, who has been solid this evening, cuts out a "pase de la muerte" from Ander Barrenetxea, aimed at his fellow sub Aihen. That could have been five.
Back to square one for Madrid, who now need three goals again to force extra time. And now they've got 20 minutes to find them.
In fact, that's seven goals in five Copa games for Isak this season. Pichichi.
Isak makes way for Real Sociedad, Aihen Muñoz on. An ovation from the visiting fans, some grudging applause from the locals for the striker, who has been excellent this evening.
Isak turns provider this time as he gets clear on the right. The Swede picks out Merino in the area and he turns the ball past the hapless Areola, who is having an evening to forget.
Brahim goes down rather hopefully in the area but Benzema is penalised for a foul on Le Normand.
Zubeldia goes in the book for flooring Vinicius, who was flying down the left. It had to be done from La Real's point of view.
Odegaard goes off to an ovation, the more conservative Ander Guevara on to replace him.
Vinicius! What a move from the Brazilian, who jinks and twists and turns and carves out a shooting chance. He can't find the top corner with the eventual effort though.
Real Madrid are pressing ferociously now and La Real are struggling to play it out from the back. That is Imanol's philosophy but in a cup tie at 3-1 up there's a case for finding the upper tier occasionally.
30 minutes left on the clock... can La Real maintain their advantage? That goal has put wind in the sails of Real Madrid and the Bernabéu, who are making a lot of noise right now.
What a game...
The Brazilian beats Remiro at the near post with a cracking strike that just goes straight through the Sociedad keeper!
So, Madrid need three to force extra time. Let's see what the home side can pull out of the bag...
What a belter from the Swede! He's a completely different player to the first half version. He took a touch, picked his spot, ignored the onrushing Ramos and buried an absolute screamer past Areola!
Substitute Barrenetxea gets to the byline and pulls back a lovely ball to the Swede, who hammers a left foot volley past the helpless Areola! 2-0 to La Real!
Militão! The Brazilian gets on the end of a Kroos free kick but his header doesn't have much bite and Remiro plucks it out of the air.
And indeed, it's been chalked off! What a let off for Madrid, who were carved open by a glorious Odegaard through ball.
Barrenetxea on for La Real, the 18-year-old striker who started the last Copa game. La Real not content to sit on this lead. They'll go for more.
We're back underway!
Well, well. Januzaj, who had a decent first half, has gone off. Meanwhile, Luka Modric is on for James Rodríguez.
The teams are coming back out. Let's see if there have been any changes....
Zidane could seek to fight fire with fire and let Rodrygo loose at the expense of Brahim, who has had a fairly quiet half. That would keep La Real's full backs in check if nothing else.
Zidane's side haven't done much wrong; there has been some stout defending and they have created chances as well but have come up against a fine performance from Merino and the intervntion of the woodwork when Ramos thought he'd levelled.
Some first half stats. Most of the possession for the hosts but La Real have been lightening on the break and have had the better of the chances. Isak has been excellent but has perhaps lacked a little cool-headedness ni front of goal while Odegaard and Oyarzabal have been like dervishes on the flanks.
Phew! And breathe. Real Sociedad lead Real Madrid 1-0 at half time.
Kroos! The German has a decent pop and it flies wide! The whistle blows on a wonderful half of football in the Bernabéu.
Vinicius takes a rather embarrassing dive at the other end. The ref just shakes his head.
Isak again! The Swede is clean through and really should have buried that! What a chance again, but he blasts wide. Youthful exuberance.
Isak! What a chance! He had more time than he thought there and should at least have hit the target.
Marcelo! The Brazilian gets his laces through a shot on the left and it's hit well enough but Remiro is equal to it. More good work from the Sociedad keeper.
With a glance about, Oyarzabal decides to play it safe and strokes it backwards to safety. La Real will look to turn down the volume now until the clock. Can Real find that all-important pre-half time psychological equaliser?
It's been an absolutely hell-for-leather half in the Bernabéu, chances flying about at both ends. Only Odegaard's speculative effort, coupled with Areola's howler, separates the sides.
Off the bar! Ramos rises above the visiting defence and guides a header onto the underside of the upright. Fortunately for La Real, it rebounds beyond the goal line to safety! What a chance!
Remiro again! Great work from Vinicius sees the ball fall to Valverde just outside the area and the Uruguayan hammers it goalwards. The La Real keeper makes a fine save though!
La Real with another decent chance! This time Odegaard takes too long over it in the area and ends up being ushered away from danger.
Marcelo has looked excellent on the left this evening so far, fizzing attacking moves coupled with some solid defensive work.
What a save! Remiro gets down to parry a stinging James drive away after a decent Real Madrid move.
A reminder that this season Copa ties are a one-off affair, at least until the two-legged semis, which means there will be extra time and penalties this evening if required.
Isak! The Swede has a pop but it's over the top.
Marcelo gets his head to a dangerous cross, the Brazilian well-positioned at the far stick.
Real are genuinely rattled after that goal. Not sure what they expected this evening but they must have seen La Real play Barça a few weeks ago...
Toni Kroos continues this evening's theme... scuffed shots and wild hacks, managing both in the pace of a second as he hits row x with his second bite of the old cereza.
Marcelo! What a run from the Brazilian, who tees up Benzema for a sitter only for the Frenchman to scuff his shot into the turf.
Well, well, well. A player Zidane clearly had no time for comes back to haunt the Frenchman.
Odegaard does not celebrate. La Real fans do.
Goooooooooooollll! Odegaard! Areola saves from Isak, but he lets a fairly innocuous shot from the former Real man through his legs on the rebound!
Vinicius makes a glorious run down the left and puts in a decent cross, where Nacho is waiting. He does hit the occasional goal of the season contender but on this occasion makes a right pig's ear of it.
Le Normand in the book for a no-look block on James. Innocence is pleaded, but not believed for a second by the seasoned Lahoz, who has seen it all before.
Imanol is not happy about a James challenge on Monreal and gives the fourth official a bit of choice language, drawing a rebuke from match referee Mateu Lahoz, who suggests he'll be off if there's any more of that.
Isak! The ball falls to the lanky Swede in the area from the corner but he can't quite get it out from under his feet! La Real looking really dangerous now.
Januzaj! What a chance for La Real! The winger gets into a shooting position and Militão comes flying in to deny him! More excellent work from the Madrid defender.
It's been a lively opening 15 but short on genuine chances. Benzema's shot at the near stick the closest either side have come to getting off the mark but there are some goals in this, you suspect on the current evidence.
James and Brahim combine to sandwich Monreal and the ref hands La Real a free kick.
Odegaard into the book for a stamp on Ramos.
Benzema! The Frenchman draws a save from Merino at the near post with a low drive. It was fairly straightforward for the Sociedad keeper but needed to be clean with plenty of white shirts buzzing in for the scraps.
La Real break down the right again and Militão is alert to the danger, cutting out a ball that Isak was running on to. Good work from the Madrid defender.
A promising La Real attack breaks down as Isak and Oyarzabal fail to read each other's intentions. Nice movement of the ball from the visitors though.
A frantic start, both sides really going for the jugular early on. Nice open game in the first five minutes.
James! The Colombian wriggles into a shooting position and lets fly, but it's blocked. Areola is out quickly at the other end to snuff out a quick break but makes an awful mess of his clearance. La Real can't capitalise though.
Odegaard gets away down the right and pings a cross towards the onrushing green shirts, but Areola is out quickly and gathers.
Here we go!
Ok, the players are out, the handshakes are underway, and we're about to get underway...
Real Madrid are favourites to win the league this season, according to the camel coats, but what about the Copa? Mirandés are obviously the popular choice after they secured their place in the last four and Granada are surprise contenders as well. What can Athletic and Sociedad do to upset the apple cart?
Here's Zidane's bench: Courtois, Varane, Modric, Jovic, Isco, Mendy, Rodrygo.
That Sociedad front four of Odegaard, Januzaj, Oyarzabal and Isak is going to be a proper handful for Madrid this evening...
Anyway, back to this evening's game and Brahim Díaz will start for Madrid. It's his first of the season under Zinedine Zidane and so far the 20-year-old has managed just 94 minutes in 2019-20. He could double that this evening on a big opportunity for the former Manchester City player.
The last time Spain used it was in 2012, and the last time it hosted a Spanish club game was in 2007 while it was also used for the UEFA Cup final in 2003. Wembley, or the Maracanã, it ain't.
There will of course be no more of the traditional "where shall we play the final" to and fro every season after the RFEF decided this season's showpiece, and the next three after that, will be staged at Sevilla's La Cartuja stadium. It makes sense as a neutral ground, but you'd be hard-pressed to find a stadium in Spain that is less-loved among football fans.
Real Sociedad are seeking a first Copa triumph since the 1986-87 season, when they defeated Atlético Madrid on penalties after a 2-2 draw in La Romareda. On the score sheet that day was Txiki Begiristain, Manchester City's current head of recruitment.
The Serbia striker himself has said he doesn't know quite where it's all gone wrong since he arrived at the Bernabéu. He'll probably get a chance off the bench this evening though.
Here's Zinedine Zidane's starting XI. A very rare start for Brahim, a vote of confidence from the Frenchman, and a place on the bench for Luka Jovic, which most certainly is not.
The 20-year-old is also our designated player to watch this evening. You can read why and avail yourself of some facts and figures ahead of the game in our preview piece right here.
Zinedine Zidane is seeking a place in the semi-finals as he looks to add the only major trophy to have eluded him as a player and a coach to his impressive laurels. But will his former charge Martin Odegaard come back to haunt him? The Norwegian has been in fine form of late.
Hello and welcome to AS English's live coverage of the Copa del Rey quarter-final between Real Madrid and Real Sociedad from the Santiago Bernabéu. Kick-off is at 19:00 CET.
