Martin Odegaard is one of the sensations in LaLiga this season with Real Sociedad. He returns to Madrid on Thursday night to play his parent team, Real Madrid, as a break-out European star. His stats suggest that, alongside Messi and Luis Suárez, he is one of the most influential players in Spanish football. In LaLiga this season, he has been involved in 24 goals according to InStat.

That is equal to the two Barcelona players mentioned but it is the highest figure on his team. Relatively speaking, he has been involved in 65% of Real Sociedad goals with Messi and Suárez participating in 46% of Barcelona goals. He does it slightly less frequently, however, with 1.2 plays that end in goals per game. Messi does it 1.4 times a game and Suárez 1.6 times.

Odegaard is a decisive playermaker in the final third. He is the player with the most balls into the penalty area with 189 with 106 of those hitting their intended target - a 56% success rate. Amongst the 10 players with the most passes into the area, just Trippier and Parejo (55% success rate) come close to the Norweigan. Kroos has a higher percentage of success (59%) but has tried it far less frequently (121 times in total with 71 completed passes).

Another stat supplied by InStat is that of line-breaking passes where you pass to a teammate in a goal-scoring position or pass through the defense. And lone behold, Odegaard finds himself at the top end of that table too. Only Messi with 143 is better than the Norweigan, who has 90 of such passes. He is a country mile ahead of Jesús Navas in third place with 65. The first player on Madrid's team that appears on the list is Benzema with 47.

The 21-year-old is the best attacking midfielder in the league this season according to InStat (their point-scoring system values minutes played, goals, assists, passes, fouls, duels and dribbles). He has 309 points and is the only player to have more than 300. In the top ten players, you also have Kroos (299 points), Modric (289) y Fede Valverde (287). Three opponents on Thursday but three players he will soon call teammates.
