10 things from week 5 of the Clausura 2020
Pumas demolished Atletico San Luis, Cruz Azul defeated Pachuca, Chivas lost against Tigres and America got a victory against Queretaro at the Corregidora.
The fifth week of the Clausura 2020 ended on Sunday and it left us with a number of surprises. Tigres hosted Chivas and demolished them; Cruz Azul defeated Pachuca at the Aztec stadium; Pumas scored 4 goals against Atletico San Luis; and America managed to defeat Queretaro on Saturday night.
We also saw the great exhibition that Jorge Valdivia gave us with Monarcas in the victory against Atlas, while Puebla forgave Santos at the Cuauhtemoc stadium and the current champions, Monterrey, could not win on their visit to Leon.
The magician arrived at Liga MX
Jorge Valdivia played wonderfully for 90 minutes with Monarcas when they defeated Atlas 3-1. This is the first victory in five weeks for Morelia and it was thanks to the Chilean midfielder and the goals that were scored by Achilier, Ortiz and Aristeguieta.
Puebla forgave Santos in the Cuauhtemoc stadium
Julio Furch scored the first goal of the game and then Oswaldo Martinez tied it up for the home team. Soon after that, Alan Acosta scored an own goal and it seemed that Puebla was going to get the victory but then Christian Menendez brought the game level for the visitors. On the 95th minute Martinez, who had scored the second goal of the game, missed a penalty and Puebla had to settle for one point instead of three.
Toluca managed to tie against Tijuana
Tijuana and Toluca tied 1-1 on Friday night but have not had a great semester so far. Alex Castro scored for the home team and it seemed that they were going to get all three points, before Michael Estrada levelled the game with two minutes to go. He has been Toluca’s best player so far.
Cruz Azul made a statement at home
Cruz Azul defeated Pachuca 3-1 at the Aztec stadium. Santi Gimenez scored a great goal to tie the game and then Pablo Cepellini got a red card leaving the home team with 10 players. When it seemed that Cruz Azul was going to let their fans down, Jonathan Rodriguez and Juan Escobar gave the team the victory.
Chivas can’t find the right path
Guadalajara lost 3-0 against Tigres with Andre-Pierre Gignac scoring two of the three goals of the night. Also Enner Valencia scored for the first time in 9 months and hopefully this boosts his confidence the rest of the semester. For this game Chivas got two of their star players back, JJ Macias and Alexis Vega but little could they do help the team get their second victory of the Clausura 2020. One of the biggest highlights of the game was the opportunity that Oribe Peralta had to score for Chivas but he missed in front of the goal.
Leon is the new leader of the Clausura 2020
Leon has been one of the most consistent teams in the past semester and they continue to be a threat this year. After defeating Monterrey they are now at the top of the table with 12 points and are a solid candidate to win the title this semester. The home team defeated the current champions 3-1 with Luis Montes scoring two of the three goals. This is the worst start from Monterrey in the past 10 years.
Pumas remain strong at home
Pumas have not lost a game this semester and they are in second place. They demolished Atletico San Luis 4-0 at home with Favio Alvarez and Juan Dinenno scoring a goal each and Carlos Gonzalez netting a brace. So far Pumas have three victories at home with seven goals for and one against, and they are the only undefeated team in the whole league so far.
America defeated Queretaro
They came, they saw, they conquered. America visited Queretaro and with two goals from Andres Ibargüen they defeated the home team 2-1 on Saturday night. Miguel Herrera is doing a great job managing the team with all the injuries they have suffered this year, including the latest one of Nicolas Benedetti who got injured playing with his national team on Saturday. Currently America is in fourth place with 10 points.
Juarez hasn’t lost in 4 games
Since losing in week 1 against Chivas, Juarez is having a good Clausura 2020 and they haven’t lost in four games. The new team of the Liga MX defeated Necaxa this weekend and they now have 10 points in five weeks.
Mena is at the top of the scoring table
The Ecuadorian striker is having an outstanding tournament so far and has scored a goal in every single game. Mena is averaging a goal every 86 minutes and since he arrived in Leon he has been a key player team.
