Miguel Herrera “Guillermo Ochoa is America’s number one goalkeeper”
After making a mistake against Queretaro last Sunday, Herrera wanted to make it clear that Ochoa will continue to be America’s number one goalkeeper.
Guillermo Ochoa is playing his second semester with America after playing for eight years in Europe, but things have not been that easy since he returned. In his first couple of games he made minor mistakes but adapted very quickly and soon became one of their best players, America even made it to the final last semester.
Now after five games of the Clausura 2020, reporters are starting to doubt if Ochoa should continue to be America’s number one goalkeeper. This questioning comes after the mistake he made last Saturday night when he failed to clear the ball from a corner and Queretaro took advantage of his mistake to tie the game.
After that mistake, rumors started circulating that claimed Herrera was considering starting backup goalie Oscar Jimenez if Ochoa kept making mistakes, but it was Miguel Herrera himself who came out to clarify the situation.
“I never said that and I think that both are fantastic goalkeepers that is why they are in America. Someone made up a lie but I have a great relationship with both goalies and since he arrived I made it clear that Guillermo Ochoa will be our number one goalkeeper. Since we are playing in two tournaments it is normal that I switched them up in some games,” he declared to ESPN.
So far Guillermo Ochoa has kept a clean sheet in three of the five games America has played so far in the Clausura 2020. He has received four and in two of those he made a clear mistake and that is why the rumors started to circulate.
“Yes he made a mistake against Queretaro but before that he made amazing saves. Nobody is perfect and everyone makes mistakes every now and then. Ochoa knows that he has competition with Jimenez but we are a team and I will always do what is best for the team,” he said.
