Jordan Henderson is set to return when Liverpool face Atlético Madrid in this week's Champions League Last 16 return leg, Reds manager Jürgen Klopp has confirmed.

The Liverpool captain has not played since a hamstring injury meant he was substituted late in the first leg of the last-16 tie between the two teams on 18 February, and missed the four subsequent matches against West Ham, Watford, Chelsea and Bournemouth.

Liverpool given Hendo and Robbo boost

The defending hampions go into the return leg at Anfield 1-0 down and Andy Robertson is also in contention after sitting out the match against Bournemouth last weekend. Goalkeeper Alisson had already been ruled out due to a hip injury and is also likely to be absent for Monday's trip to Merseyside rivals Everton in the Premier League.

"Hendo is ready," Klopp said of his skipper, who returned to training at Melwood on Sunday. "What we do with that, I don't know – or maybe I know and I won't say."

Robertson was at Tuesday's news conference alongside Klopp and knew there was little margin for error against Diego Simeone's side. "It's a knockout competition and if you are not at your best on the night then you go out," said the Scotland captain. "We are thinking about the positives, giving 100 per cent. If we play the Liverpool way then we will walk off knowing we have given our all. Hopefully it can be another special Anfield night. When we get chances we need to take them because we are 1-0 down. We need a complete Liverpool performance. My ankle has felt good since the winter break. Obviously that week off helped.  On Friday I felt my hamstring. Obviously I thought I was fine but I missed out [against Bournemouth] as a precaution and then James Milner got man of the match!

We need a complete Liverpool performance - Robertson

"Over there we didn't have a shot on target... so if we do that again, we won't go through. We dominated possession, which I believe we will do again tomorrow night at Anfield. But - it's about what we do with that possession. It's about creating chances and trying to be clinical in front of goal - that's what we need to do tomorrow night. We need to create more chances than we did over there and when they fall to us we need to try to take them because we are 1-0 down and we obviously need to overturn that. On the flip side, we need to be wary of them going forward and try to keep a clean sheet to give us the best possible chance. We need a complete Liverpool performance," the defender concluded.
