Africa: Five ICU beds per million inhabitants

The total number of intensive-care unit beds across 43 of Africa's 54 countries is lower than 5,000, the World Health Organization (WHO) has said today. This translates to around five ICU beds per million in these nations, the body explained, compared to 4,000 per million in Europe.

What’s more, the WHO said that 41 African countries have reported having fewer than 2,000 functional ventilators available to their public health services.

Nigeria currently have 276 cases as they try to desperately keep the virus at bay. They have granted amnesty to nearly 2,600 prisoners in an effort to decongest jails and avoid clusters of the virus spreading. Nigeria’s interior minister Rauf Aregbesola announced the news on Thursday.

“In a symbolic gesture of the amnesty given to the 2,600 inmates across Nigeria, 41 Federal inmates and 29 FCT inmates making a total of 70 inmates who met the above criteria will be released today from the Kuje Custodial Center in Abuja,” Aregbesola said.

Patients discharged in Lagos

Lagos Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu has tweeted out some good news, with the recovery of seven patients who have been discharged from the Mainland Hospital. "This brings to 39 the number of discharged patients in Lagos. The patients include one female and six males; three of the discharged male patients are foreign nationals; two Ukrainians and one Italian" he continued. Although Africa accounts for a fraction of global cases of the disease, its countries are feeling the economic impact. In a report published on Thursday, the World Bank said the outbreak is expected to push sub-Saharan Africa into recession in 2020 for the first time in 25 years.

IMF considering Nigeria funds request

The International Monetary Fund confirmed that they were still considering Nigeria's request for $3.4 billion in emergency financing to combat the impact of the new coronavirus pandemic on Africa's biggest economy.

Coronavirus cases in DR Congo continue upward trend

Nigerians have reservations about arrival of Chinese doctors

A team of 15 Chinese doctors arrived at Nnamdi Azikwe International Airport in Abuja yesterday to help fight Nigeria's growing coronavirus crisis. The Chinese medical expedition has been brought in on a month-long trip to lend their knowledge and experience of fighting the spread of Covid-19. A cargo of several tons of medical supplies and protective equipment also arrived in Nigeria from China. But not everyone is happy about the visit - the Nigerian Medical Association (NMA) criticised the invitation as “ill-timed" and "inappropriate" while health workers are worried that they could be inadvertently importing the virus from a country that is still not out of the woods.

Joggers arrested for breaching lockdown restrictions

Parts of Nigeria, including the capital Lagos have been under lockdown since 31 March but it seems not everyone is getting used to the idea of social distancing. On Wednesday, 34 people were handed community service sentences after being found guilty of breaching lockdown restrictions. The group had been caught by police jogging on one the city's main motorways. All non-essential travel has been temporarily banned in Lagos - and the government has prohibited people gathering in groups of 20 or more.

On Monday, Nigerian actress Funke Akindele was hit with a 260 euro fine for holding a party at her mansion in Lagos, while lockdown was in full effect. She explained that everyone attending the party was already living there, although there were reports to the contrary.
