UK supermarket opening hours: 13-19 April: Tesco, Asda, Lidl...

An overview of the opening hours this week for the majority of the biggest UK supermarkets: Tesco, Morrisons, Sainsbury's, Aldi, Lidl, Asda during the coronavirus crisis.

The majority of UK supermarkets have adopted measures to help stop the spread of coronavirus, which include social distancing rules, limits on the number of customers in the store at the same time, the presence of security of 'store greeters' to ensure capacity limits are adhered to and amended timetables regarding opening hours.

With the Easter holidays in the past we look at the current opening hours for a selection of the main supermarkets in the United Kingdom.

At present, no supermarkets are open 24 hours.

Tesco

The bulk of TESCO stores are now operating at reduced hours, and will open from 6am and 10pm.

There are however branches of the chain's Superstores who have a later opening time with hours of activity from 8am through to 10pm with Sunday opening hours of 10am through to 4pm.The fuel/petrol station at the superstores will open daily from 10am through to midnight.

Sainsbury’s

Sainsbury’s stores current opening hours are based on store size and location with many of the  Sainsbury’s Local branches opening prior to the superstores and petrol stations, will open from 8am to 8pm, Monday to Saturday.

During the Covid-19 pandemic, priority is given, every Monday, Wednesday and Friday in all branches to elderly, disabled and vulnerable customers; while NHS staff carrying a valid ID will have priority Monday to Saturday, from 7.30am to 8am.

Asda

During the Covid-19 crisis, Asda have reduced opening hours in all stores from 10am through to 8pm (Monday-Saturday). As is the case with Sainsbury's, certain hours have been given over to NHS staff for priority shopping.

The majority of stores are open on Sunday from 10am through to 4pm.

Morrisons

Morrisons are extending opening hours to now open up at 7am Monday to Saturday.

Branches will close at 8pm and now open an hour early between Monday and Saturday for NHS staff - between 6am and 7am.

On Sundays, Morrisons will open at 9am for NHS workers to shop and will open at 9.30am for other customers.

Waitrose

The Waitrose chain has a varied range of opening hours this week between its branches depending on region and size of store.

You can find the opening times of your local Waitrose supermarket using its branch locator.

Aldi

From Monday to Saturday, Aldi will stores will open between 9am and 7pm, with Sunday opening hours staying the same - 10am to 4pm (or 6pm in Scotland).

Aldi is giving priority access to emergency workers at any time of the day, meaning NHS and 999 workers will be able to go to the front of the queue.

Lidl

The majority of Lidl stores open from 7am or 8am until 10pm, Monday to Saturday, and 10am until 4pm on Sundays.

Iceland

The Iceland chain is opening its supermarkets one hour early, between 8am - 9am, for elderly customers. The final opening hour from Monday to Saturday will be NHS staff only.

M&S

M&S has also implemented a special shopping hour for NHS and emergency service workers, which is the first hour of trading each Tuesday and Friday morning.
