MLS will be the first professional league to resume activities in the United States
Due to the coronavirus pandemic and some players testing positive, all of the major leagues in the US are on hold, but after more than a month the MLS is set to return.
Major League Soccer (MLS) approved the start of individual training session back on 6 May - since then, the league's 26 teams have designed a plan for their players to prepare for the restart of the season in early June.
The 2020 season was suspended at the start of March after just two matchdays. Initially, it was announced that the league would resume after 30 days, but due to the number of confirmed Covid-19 cases in the United States, the league decided to return after 8 June.
The 26 teams returning to training under strict rules amid the coronavirus pandemic was the first step towards the return of the competition. The second step will be when all of the teams fly out to Orlando to resume the season during the summer.
Matches will be played behind closed doors at the Disney sports complex and possibly other stadiums in Orlando. Should the plan be confirmed, the MLS will become the first major league in the US to resume activities since the Covid-19 outbreak.
Players, coaches and support staff will spend the summer living at resorts near Disney World but under quarantine. The length of time clubs will stay in Orlando will depend on how the coronavirus situation develops - clubs could stay at the resort for a longer period of time or return to their states after the summer.
Under the Orlando plan, the MLS is aiming for teams to play multiple matches per day without people in the stands or near the complex. Also players would have to be tested regularly and undergo regular medical evaluations.
