India rejects Pakistan offer of help disbursing Covid-19 cash

India has rejected an offer from Pakistan to help disburse cash during the coronavirus. Pakistan's PM, Imran Khan, offered to help India with the use of a Pakistan cash transfer programme, which Khan said has been "lauded internationally for its reach and transparency".

India dismissed the offer, with  foreign ministry spokesman Anurag Srivastava saying that his country's stimulus package was as large as the entire gross domestic product of Pakistan.

"Concerns that the picture is more bleak"

Coupled with the country's relatively low fatality rate, the Indian government’s announcement that recoveries have overtaken active cases for the first time has been met with cautious optimism - but, reports the BBC, there are "concerns that the picture is more bleak":

Indian bank employees "in panic mode"

Indian bank employees are demanding better cleanliness at lenders' branches and more flexibility in staff work schedules following the death of at least 11 bankers and bank employees in the country due to the coronavirus outbreak.

The United Forum of Bank Unions (UFBU) - an umbrella body of nine unions representing nearly 900,000 employees of all types of banks in India - asked for better safety standards last week in a letter to the finance ministry and several banks, a copy of which was seen by Reuters.

"Employees are in panic mode," said Devidas Tuljapurkar, convener of the UFBU's chapter in the hard-hit western state of Maharashtra that is home to financial capital Mumbai.

The letter, which said at least 11 bank staff have died from the virus, asked that certain employees who want to, should be allowed to work from home and is demanding government insurance cover for those who do venture out.

At least 100 bankers have been affected by the virus, according to a union source and a banking source. (Reuters)

India posts another record daily increase in cases

As India closes in on 300,000 coronavirus cases, the country has recorded its biggest single-day coronavirus spike so far, after confirming 9,996 new infections in the 24-hour cycle between Wednesday and Thursday.

India, whose case count is lower only than the United States, Brazil, Russia and the United Kingdom, has now seen a total of 286,579 people infected by the virus, the Indian health ministry said.

There were 357 coronavirus-related fatalities between Wednesday and Thursday, taking the death toll to 8,102, the ministry said.

Temperature, humidity affects virus life on surfaces

Temperature, humidity affect how long virus 'survives' on surfaces. A new mathematical model adds to evidence that hotter, dryer conditions may diminish the amount of time virus-packed droplets remain contagious on surfaces. Once droplets emitted by an infected person dry, the virus particles inside it become inactive, researchers said on Monday in the journal Physics of Fluids.

"The outdoor weather ... determines the duration of drying of respiratory droplets deposited on surfaces. The drying time is linked to the survival of the coronavirus inside the droplets," coauthor Rajneesh Bhardwaj of the Indian Institute of Technology Bombay told Reuters.

"This may not be the sole factor but definitely the outdoor weather matters ... and our study provides some evidence for this fact.

Kerala epidemiology team to probe virus source as cases surge

Covid-19 cases continue to rise and in many instances, the source of infection isn't known. The state health department has decided to launch an epidemiological investigation into the phenomenon. The department will examine how patients contract the virus and from where. Most cases within that group is assessed to have been reported from Kollam, Kottayam and Kozhikode.

"The department will examine such cases separately. The Chief Minister had given an instruction in this regard at the high-level assessment meeting on 8 June," a health department officer explained.
