The United States has been the epicenter of the coronavirus pandemic for several months now, with the country recording a total of over 2.5 million confirmed cases (more than a quarter of the global total of just under 10 million). More than 125,000 Americans have dies  from the disease. Moreover, health experts spoke out against states trying to reopen their economies while the first wave of the Covid-19 pandemic was still playing out and clearly not fully under control.

The figures continue to back up the calls for caution from the experts, with the United States recording an all-time daily high of 39,327 new coronavirus infections on Thursday according to data provided by the John Hopkins University (JHU) before recording 45,942 infections on Friday. Many states have reported an increase in new coronavirus cases since reopening the economy.

States are taking drastic measures against Covid-19

The Governor of Texas governor ordered bars to close and announced other “targeted measures” on Friday to stop the spreading of the Covid-19. Florida on the other hand prohibited bars from selling alcohol until further notice.

These strict measures are being taken in a bid to dial down the rate of infections across the country. According to figures compiled by Johns Hopkins University the previous high of daily Covid-19 confirmed cases was 36,400 back in 24 April at what was then thought to be the peak of the pandemic in the United States.

The Centers for Disease Control say up to 20 million American may have been infected with the virus. This estimate was based on blood samples collected from across the country which were tested for the presence of antibodies to the virus. The new confirmed coronavirus cases that are now being reported appear to be concentrated among young people who are going back out to bars and restaurants and at times ignoring advice on social distancing and mask wearing.

Texas coronavirus cases

Texas confirmed a record 5,996 new cases on Thursday, while there were also 47 more deaths reported, the highest daily toll for a month. On Friday, Florida broke its own daily record for new infections, reporting 8,942 new cases. The previous record was 5,508, reported on Wednesday. The state now has a total of 122,960 recorded cases and 3,366 deaths.
