West Ham United vs Chelsea: Premier League preview

There have been differing fortunes for these two London sides since the Premier League’s restart, with West Ham yet to pick up a point in their battle against relegation. Back-to-back 2-0 defeats to Wolverhampton Wanderers and Tottenham Hotspur leave them above the drop zone on goal difference alone, having managed just three shots on target in that time. Chelsea, on the other hand, have won three from three and beat Manchester City to crown Liverpool champions in their last Premier League outing. After Manchester United’s victory over Brighton last night, Frank Lampard will want a win to regain their five-point lead on fifth place.

Lampard will need to use his squad to ease fixture congestion

Chelsea have had a winning start, but after FA Cup action on the weekend tonight’s game will be their third in seven games. West Ham, in comparison, have not played in over a week. Lampard will want to call upon the strength in depth of this Chelsea squad to keep things fresh. He made three changes at half-time on Sunday and may decide to rest N’Golo Kanté after Ross Barkley and Mateo Kovacic’s impressive performances from the bench. Adding to his options going forward, Callum Hudson-Odoi is thought to be close to a return from injury and Pedro is available for selection, having agreed a short-term extension to his current contract.
