Barcelona surrender LaLiga title with home defeat to Osasuna

Update:
Barcelona's Spanish defender Gerard Pique (L) and Barcelona's Argentine forward Lionel Messi wipe their face during the Spanish League football match between FC Barcelona and CA Osasuna at the Camp Nou stadium in Barcelona on July 16, 2020. (Pho

Barcelona 1-2 Osasuna

Another disappointing display from Barcelona saw the Catalan side sign off at Camp Nou with a 1-2 defeat to a well drilled and organised Osasuna side who were reduced to ten men in the 75th minute.

The visitors went ahead early in the first half with Arnaiz slamming the ball past Ter Stegen to put the men from Pamplona ahead on the quarter hour mark. A Leo Messi free kick which caressed the crossbar was the closest Setien's men can to finding the net in the first 45'.

Things improved for the home side especially after the introduction of Luis Suarez and Vidal as Barcelona drew level via a sublime trademark Lionel Messi direct free-kick. With news of Real Madrid leading from the capital, the lingering fire from Barcelona was extinguished as Torres in time added on rubbed salt in the wounds firing Los Rojillos ahead in the 95th minute.

Only a Champions League win can now salvage a disappointing season for the Catalan side.

All over in Barcelona, a big win for Osasuna who played with ten men for the final 20 minutes or so.

Frustration at Camp Nou now and Barcelona fans will be furious with this performance and much of that ire expected to be directed at Quique Setien

Down to ten men, three sky blue shirts marauded forwarded faced with two Barcelona defenders.

Goooooooooooooooooool Torres makes it 2 for Osasuna.

93

Lato finds himself free in the Barcelona half and is forced to have an effort from an acute angle.

Big goal for Celta as they tie against Levante (Celta 3-3 Levante)

Change for Osasuna: Pervis off and Lato on.

90

Normal time is up and we'll have seven minutes of time added on.

The point is also no good for Osasuna in their outside chance of a Europa League place but the men from Pamplona have more than impressed tonight.

89

Great work from Jordi Alba who sees his cross intercepted after fine work from the right back.

88

Little in terms of intensity from the home side who seem resigned to their fate. A disappointing end to the campaign for the reigning league champions.

86

Osasuna make a rare foray into the Barcelona box and it takes Lenglet to make a crucial interception.

Torres on for Moncayola

Villarreal score at Valdebebas ...Real Madrid 2-1 Villarreal

Athletic 0-1 Leganes (latest). A major lifeline for the Cucumber Growers as VAR is to review the goal.

81

Less than 10' here at Camp Nou. Can Barcelona find the winner?  This performance is somewhat reflective of their performances in the ten games so far since the restart. Drudgery and brilliance in equal doses but little in terns of consistency.

Real Madrid are six points clear at the top of the table as things stand.

Latest: Betis 0-2 Alaves

Jordi Alba on for Junior

Osasuna now down to ten men for the remainder of the night as Puig makes way for De Jong.

Gallego awarded a straight red after a VAR review

Gallego carded.

Madrid have a penalty in Valdebebas. VAR being consulted but a goal would see the side from the capital bag their 34th title.

Possession Barcelona 80%-20% Osasuna

72

The Messi goal has given the game a lift as it finally kickstarted the home side into action as they push for a second.

Mallorca heading for 2a as it stands.

Latest: Mallorca 1-2 Granada

Adrian off for Osasuna with Baraja on. Arnaiz also off for Los Rojillos with Enric Gallego his replacement.

Pique carded for dissent and the defender will now miss match day 38.

The ball is in the net with Suarez rifling home an incredible volley but the flag is up. VAR to be consulted

Busquets on for FCB with Rakitic making way for the birthday boy.

67

The goal has unsettled the visitors and Barcelona look a slightly different proposition now. The Catalan side are playing with an added confidence since the Messi goal.

Osasuna's Pervis carded for dissent.

Messi's 23rd league goal of the season. Barcelona need to bag another and still hope that Villarreal can deliver favour in Madrid.

Iconic Messi !

Gooooooooooooool. Barcelona draw level.

Suarez fouled 25 yards out and Messi places himself again over the ball. Once again perfect distance and placing for the No. 10.. The Argentine steps and drives it home . Perfection from Messi !

60

An hour gone at Camp Nou and what can Barcelona do? It's been a lacklustre from the Catalan side with Osasuna more than up to the task delivering a organised display of defensive solidity.

Suarez and Vidal on for Semedo and Braithwaite (FCB changes)

As things stand, Real Madrid will win their 34th league title. Barcelona poised to bring on Vidal.

Rakitic carded as Atleti go ahead in Getafe (latest Getafe 0-1 At. Madrid)

Setien has to change things around. Barcelona look so flat. Suarez on to add some grit to the front line?

55

Many people talk about Barcelona being Messi plus ten others and this has been true tonight with the Argentine the only player playing with fire in his belly.

54

Messi tries again and blasts the ball at Herrera as Semedo is carded.

Alaves go ahead in Seville. Betis 0-1 Alaves latest

Celta 2-3 Levante (latest)

51

Finally some trickery from Fati but the striker drives the ball over the bar.

50

Free for the home side as Rakitic is fouled on the edge of the box. This is very much Messi territory! The No.10 steps up and hits the ball over the bar.

Oier on for Brasanac.

Luis Suarez appears to be getting ready for action.

The ball is In the Osasuna net but Messi just caught offside, by inches but the Argentine was off.

No changes at the break.

Barcelona start the second 45'.

Pique

This pic of Gerard Pique pretty much sums up the first half for Barcelona.

j 37

Here's a snapshot of all the half time scores tonight

The whistle sounds and it's the visitors ahead against a below par Barcelona side.

Brasanac being stretchered off in a degree of distress. Osasuna set to play out the final minutes of the action with ten men.

Match held up as the Osasuna medical team are on the pitch to tend to Brasanac who seems to be in pain with a shoulder problem.

Three minutes of time to be added here in Barcelona.

Granada 1-1 Mallorca (latest)

Celta 2-2 Levante (latest)

45

Final action of the half and Setien has his work cut out at the interval to deliver a motivational speech to lift his men. This has ben a very, very flat first half from FC Barcelona.

43

Braithwaite manages a shot but has to watch as his effort drifts wide.

42

Having said that, full credit to Osasuna with the side from Pamplona so well organised and defensively sound.

40

Good skill from Messi and the Argentine seems to have been impeded in the box. Nothing doing for the match official and Messi really has been the only spark for the Catalan side. A lack of understanding in the home side it would appear tonight with Fati and Puig yet to get going.

39

Messi strikes and forces Herrera to tip wide. Another corner for the home side but Osasuna clear.

Celta 1-2 Levante (latest)

37

Barcelona win their fifth corner of the night and the ball deflects for yet another corner on the far side. Herrera punches and Osasuna clear their lines.

35

We're underway again at Camp Nou. Arthur yawns in the stand and his gesture is somewhat reflective of what his teammates have delivered. Far from vintage Barça so far.

Levante go 0-2 ahead vs. Celta (latest)

31

It's water break time here at Camp Nou and Barcelona really have a mountain to climb. They need to win and hope for a favour from Villarreal.

Total domination from the home side in terms of possession but it's the men from Pamplona ahead on the night.

The evening just got worse for Barcelona.

29

Goal at Valdebebas as Benzema puts Real Madrid ahead. Real Madrid 1-0 Villarreal (latest)

28

Barcelona are really struggling to test the visitors and the current scoreline hands the title to Real Madrid irrespective of the score at Valdebebas.

26

Another corner for Barça, a sweet dink from the Argentine but well dealt with by the men in sky blue.

24

Firpo breaks to the edge of the box but miscues his effort but manages to secure a corner for his side. Messi's effort the closest (and only) chance of the night so far for the home side.

23

Free for Barcelona as Messi lashes the ball off the bar. Best chance of the night for the Catalan side.

Osasuna go close again getting good value down the Barcelona left hand side. Moncayola goes close with a fine curled effort. Arrasate's men looking comfortable and composed and well on top here.

Mallorca 1-0 Granada (latest)

Valencia 1-0 Espanyol (latest)

A major shock at Camp Nou with the Catalan side having to dig deep against this latest setback.

Arnaiz putting the men from Pamplona ahead with a fine right footed effort into the corner.

Goooooooooooool ....Osasuna strike at Camp Nou

Osasuna do have a very, very remote chance of securing European football with a 7th place finish but Los Rojillos need to win their final two games and hope that teams jockeying above them fail to pick up points.

Celta 0-1 Levante (latest score)

11

Fati fouled on the edge of the box with Rakitic set to take ... Messi also postponed to strike.... The Argentine goes short to the Croatian and the ball is struck at the wall.

10

Ten minutes gone at Camp Nou and no goals yet.

Barcelona wind up their LaLiga campaign on Sunday with a trip to Vitoria to face relegation threatened Alaves.

7

Lenglet has an effort from long range and watches as his drive goes inches wide of the Osasuna post.

5

Little to report from the pitch at Camp Nou as Ter Stegen makes an uncharacteristic mistake but the defence are on hand to clear up the mess.

Josep Maria Bartomeu has stated that irrespective of the outcome of the league, Quique Setien will be Barcelona boss for the 2020/21 season. The Catalan side still involved in Champions League action with a Round of 16 return leg vs. Napoli coming up in August.

Good to see Riqui Puig in action again. The youngster has been one of the bright sparks for the Catalan side in this restart.

A reminder ... Barça need to win and hope that Madrid slip up against Villarreal. Should that fail to materialise then Madrid will be crowned champions.

Nine games start at the same time... our focus is on the action at Camp Nou. Osasuna to get the action underway as Sanchez Martinez sounds his whistle.

Osasuna are actually wearing their away kit tonight, light blue with white shorts with the Catalan side in their classic navy and claret shirts, navy shorts.

Less than 5 ahead of kick-off at Camp Nou. A reminder that our match official tonight is Sanchez Martinez.

Camp Nou

An earlier snap of the Camp Nou. It still is hard to take (but understandable given the circumstances) that this fabulous arena will once again ring hollow again tonight without the presence of fans. Hopefully we'll be in a position to get a small % of fans back in stadiums for the start of the 2020/21 season.

Re. the last post !

It's an overcast evening in the Catalan capital with a temperature of 24C/75F expected at kick off. Looks live the visitors will be wearing their San Fermin tribute kit tonight.

Barcelona limbering up as kick-off looms.

Barcelona with three wins in their last three outings with Osasuna bagging a win, draw and defeat in their last three match-days.

Osasuna come into the game in a relaxed mood having secured top flight survival some weeks ago with the Pamplona side currently sitting comfortably in 11th place in the table

When LaLiga action resumed last month following the Covid-19 hiatus, FC Barcelona were top of the table, two points clear of Real Madrid with fate very much in their own hands. Dropped points in Seville and Vigo and a draw at home against Atleti coupled with Madrid's incredible vein of form see the Catalan side hoping for a small miracle as Madrid go into the final two games some four points clear of Setien's men.

table

A reminder of how the LaLiga table looks coming into the penultima round of action. A win for Madrid over Villarreal and the side from the capital will secure their 34th league crown. Barcelona have to win and hope Villarreal can pull off a surprise.

The last time both sides met at Camp Nou in 2017, Barcelona romped to a 7-1 win Messi (2), Gomes (2), Alcacer (2) and Mascherano on target for the Catalan side.

Setien opting to leave Alba, Suarez and Busquets has raises a few eyebrows among Culés with Busquets incidentally celebrating his 32nd birthday today.

Seven Barcelona players are just one yellow card away from an automatic suspension with Messi, Rakitic, Junior, Suarez, Pique, Vidal and Braithwaite having to watch their step tonight.

J37

A reminder of the other nine LaLiga fixtures taking place at the same time tonight. During the live coverage from Camp Nou, we'll keep you all up to speed with major developments from around the grounds.

Quique Setien opts for the following XI:

Osasuna have confirmed their starting XI:

Kick-off in the Catalan capital is at 21:00 and the game coincides with eight other LaLiga matches starting at the same time and we'll also pay a degree of attention to the action at Valdebebas where Real Madrid could wrap up the title with a win over Villarreal.

Good evening and a very warm welcome to our live coverage of the penultimate game of the season for FC Barcelona as they welcome Osasuna to Camp Nou.
