RB Leipzig vs Paris Saint-Germain: Champions League preview

RB Leipzig have exceeded all expectations this campaign with their run to the Champions League semi-finals and have picked up some impressive victories on the way.

They topped their group comfortably and scored twice in all but one of their group stage matches. In the round-of-16 they beat last year’s finalists Tottenham Hotspur 4-0 on aggregate to see them through to the last eight. They lost top goal-scorer Timo Werner to Chelsea before the tournament resumed in Lisbon but that did not stop them knocking out an Atlético Madrid side who have proved extremely tough opposition to top European sides in recent years.

Leipzig are famed for their swashbuckling playing style but in terms of pure ability their opponents in the semi-final, PSG, have the edge in the attacking positions. The French champions dropped just two points in a group containing Real Madrid and racked up a goal-difference of +16, second only to Bayern Munich’s at the same stage. Since then a second-leg turnaround against Borussia Dortmund and an incredible injury time comeback against Atalanta have left many thinking this must be their year. They are further strengthened by the return of Kylian Mbappé, who should be fit enough to start alongside Neymar in attack.

A Long Decade

Things can change quickly in elite football but few clubs have had such a dramatic change of fortunes in the last ten years as RB Leipzig and PSG. The German club was just one-year-old a decade ago after the Red Bull company bought fifth-tier side SSV Markranstadt. The club secured four promotions in its first seven years to reach the Bundesliga and entered the Champions League after just nine years of existence. They had never progressed past the group stages until this season, but now stand just 90 minutes away from a first European final appearance in the club’s short history.

Just a decade ago the best side in the French capital had finished 13th in Ligue 1 and only qualified for Europe on the basis of lifting the Coupe de France that year. They were captained by a 37-year-old Claude Makelele and featured a 19-year-old Mahmadou Sakho in the backline. Ten years later they are undoubtedly one of the game’s elite club sides but have struggled in the Champions League, failing to match their semi-final appearance of 1994/95.

This year however things look different and they will take confidence from the manner of their knock-victories this season. Thomas Tuchel, coming up against his coaching apprentice Julian Nagelsmann, will be hoping to be the manager who takes PSG to the next levelin Europe.
