Chivas come from behind to win on matchday 12 of 2020 Guardianes tournament

Guadalajara had to fight back to beat Mazatlán on matchday 12 of the 2020 Guardianes tournament at the Akron stadium. Chivas needed three points to stay in the race for the postseason with only five games left of the tournament. After a controversial victory on Saturday night, Chivas are now in seventh place with 18 points.

Visiting team make an early statement

The referee blew the whistle and the visiting team went all-out attack because in the third minute they scored the first goal of the game. Nicolás Díaz got Mazatlán on the scoreboard first after a wonderful free-kick that Raúl Gudiño was unable to block.

Then Chivas made it clear they needed the three points in this game because in the 12th minute their captain, Jesús Molina, sent a precision header into the back of the net to level the scores. The home team celebrated and were confident they could get the victory.

Macías nets winning penalty after VAR award

Chivas continued to go on the attack and in the 27th minute Uriel Antuna crossed the ball to Cristian Calderón, who headed the ball but the defender Mario Osuna cleared it off the line. The home team started protesting to the referee that it was a handball and the incident went to VAR.

After a couple of minutes, VAR awarded a penalty kick for Chivas and Osuna was sent off for clearing the ball with his hand. It was José Juan Macías who scored the PK to give Chivas the lead 2-1 and the score didn’t change after that.

For the remainder of the game Chivas took advantage of having one more player and they ended up with the majority of the possession (66%). Chivas will visit Tijuana on matchday 13 of the 2020 Guardianes tournament.
