Daniele Bonera will be absent for Saturday's derby against Inter Milan after the AC Milan assistant coach tested positive for covid-19. It was announced on Tuesday that Bonera, a former centre-back for the Rossoneri, tested positive after feeling unwell.

Milan issue Bonera statement

Milan said in a statement: "Daniele Bonera, following a rising fever, underwent a swab test yesterday at home, which has since returned a positive test for covid-19. Bonera is currently at home and is in a good condition. All of the other swab tests taken from the squad yesterday have returned negative results."

With Bonera in isolation, he will be missing from Stefano Pioli's coaching team when Milan tackle Inter in the first derby between the teams in the 2020-21 Serie A season. Bonera also stands to be absent when Milan begin their Europa League campaign next week with a trip to face Scottish champions Celtic on Thursday 22 October.

Italian rules state that anyone that tests positive must stay in quarantine for at least 10 days and must have a negative result before being allowed to leave isolation.

Milan were boosted ahead of the derby when Zlatan Ibrahimovic was last week declared clear of coronavirus after returning two negative tests. The 39-year-old striker contracted covid-19 in September and missed four games for Milan.
