US international Weston McKennie has become the second Juventus player to test positive for coronavirus following confirmation of Cristiano Ronaldo’s diagnosis yesterday.

Following McKennie’s positive result, the Serie A club announced that the whole team would go into isolation on Wednesday evening.

Juventus statement

"Juventus Football Club announces that, during the checks provided for by the protocol in force, the player Weston McKennie has tested positive for COVID-19," Juventus said in a statement. "In compliance with the regulations and the protocol, the team entered into fiduciary isolation this evening."

"This procedure will allow all persons negative to the controls to carry out regular training and match activities, but will not allow contact with people outside of the group."

McKennie (22), who joined Juventus on loan from Schalke this summer, becomes the first high-profile US player to test positive for covid-19. He will remain in quarantine until 24 October.

27 Serie A players have tested positive

McKennie and Ronaldo’s positive tests brings the total coronavirus cases tally among Serie A footballers to 27. Genoa has been the worst affected club with 10 cases confirmed, followed by Inter Milan with six.

McKennie and Ronaldo will now miss the Bianconeri’s Serie A game against Crotone on 17 October and their Champions League opener on 20 October against Dynamo Kiev – presuming those matches go ahead.
