Controversial decisions in Chivas victory over Atlas in Clásico Tapatío

The Clásico Tapatío started in 1943 and Chivas and Atlas have played 236 times since then. The two Guadalajara sides faced each other on matchday 14 of the 2020 Guardianes tournament at the Omnilife stadium on Saturday. The home team defeated Atlas 3-2 despite the award of two penalties to the visitors by the match referee.

In the 36th minute Uriel Antuna made a fantastic run on the right side, cutting inside past the defender and rifling the ball with his left foot to score opening goal. Five minutes later Antuna set-up the ball for ‘JJ’ Macías, whose effort handed Chivas a 2-0 lead at the break.

Controversial referee decisions

The referee awarded Atlas two penalties and Raúl Gudiño blocked one of them to give Chivas the three points after the 90 minutes. The first foul of the game occurred when José Juan Vázquez tackled Ían Torres inside the box. Referee Fernando Guerrero didn’t confer with VAR but replays showed that Vázquez had touched the ball first before maknig contact with Torres.

With Chivas 2-0 up Raúl Gudiño made the save from the spot he pulled off another big save on 57 minutes to keep his team in front. On a counter attack Dieter Villalpando played a lovely give-and-go with Isaac Brizuela inside the box to score Chivas' third.

Atlas staged a late comeback with Ignacio Jeraldino scoring the opening goal for the visiting team on 87 minutes. In stoppage time Atlas had a second penalty awarded and on this occasion Victor Malcorra beat Gudiño but it was too late to influence the result.
