"Griezmann dug his own grave leaving Atlético Madrid"
A former Atlético Madrid defender offered frank words about Antoine Griezmann's situation after the Frenchman was left on the bench for el Clásico.
Antoine Griezmann quickly went from hero to villain at the Wanda Metropolitano when he left Atlético Madrid to join Barcelona in the summer of 2019.
Griezmann gave up an illustrious career at Altético for a fresh start at Barca, but so far it has not worked out as planned for the French striker.
The 29-year-old has failed to rekindle the magic he conjured up as an Atlético player during his first 15 months at Camp Nou, where many have pointed to his incompatibility with the Blaugrana project and particularly with captain Lionel Messi.
Griezmann left out of Clásico
Griezmann’s struggles at Barcelona have coincided with the rise of Masía gem Ansu Fati, with the teenager getting the nod to start ahead of the Frenchman for el Clásico at Camp Nou on Saturday, which ended 3-1 to Real Madrid.
Ronald Koeman’s decision to leave the former Atlético player on the bench for the all-important Clásico was one of the major talking points in the lead up to game, with former Atlético Madrid player Alvaro Dominguez offering his frank opinion on Griezmann’s situation.
“Griezmann dug his own grave leaving Atlético Madrid,” said the retired defender, who was a member of the Atlético first team from 2008 to 2012 after having come up through the club’s youth ranks.
Griezmann has yet to score this season after 273 minutes played over five games, which includes his eventless 10-minute cameo in el Clásico. Ansu Fati, meanwhile, has provided four goals and two assists in five appearances (294 minutes).
