Club América overcome Tigres UANL in matchday 16

Club América are aiming to secure second place of the 2020 Guardianes tournament with one game left of the regular season. The team from the capital hosted Tigres UANL in matchday 16 and secured a 3-1 win thanks to two goals from Sebastián Córdova and one from Emanuel Aguilera. Andre-Pierre Gignac scored for the visiting team and he has netted 11 in 16 appearances.

Tigres tried to control the tempo

The visiting team tried to control the game from the beginning by having long spells of possession but failed to penetrate América’s defense. The most dangerous chance that fell the visitors way was in the 16th minute after a Gignac free kick which was blocked by goalkeeper Guillermo Ochoa.

When it appeared that the first half was going to end scoreless, Sebastián Córdova appeared in the 41st minute to rifle home with a fine left footed effort.

In his first game back from suffering an injury Guillermo Ochoa pulled off an amazing save in the 56th minute of the game. The second half was low-tempo and it was not until the 86th minute that Emanuel Aguilera would score the second for América.

Tigres finally saw fortune smile on them as Andre-Pierre Gignac offered the visitors a glimmer of hope only for Sebastián Córdova to bag a third and final goal of the game to give América the victory with the final score of 3-1.

América remain in second place with 31 points and one game left of the regular season. The team from the capital will face Juárez on Friday 6 November as Tigres sit in sixth place with 27 points and are set to host Atlas on Saturday 7 November in the last game of the regular season to secure a spot in the play-offs.
