AFC CHAMPIONS LEAGUE

Three host stadiums nominated for African Champions League final

The mystery grows over the selection of the African Champions League final location although the Burj Al-Arab stadium was set to be the venue for the event.

Reports suggest that the ultimate decision on what stadium should host the final of the African Champions League, which will be held in Egypt on 27 November, is yet to be made, although the Egyptian Football Federation had earlier chosen Burj Al-Arab stadium in Alexandria.

Ahly and Zamalek of Egypt have set up a historic date after both teams made it to the final for the first time in the history of the championship. Ahly managed to beat Wydad 5-1 on aggregate in the semi-final while Zamalek defeated Raja Casablanca 4-1.

Reports have suggested that the Burj Al-Arab stadium has been ruled out as a candidate to host the game due to the unstable weather in the coastal city of Alexandria during that time of the year.

Ahead of picking the Burj-Al Arab stadium the tournament's final had supposed to have been held at the Cairo international stadium and was moved to Alexandria as per a request from Egyptian security authorities.

CAF regulations stipulate that the stadium can only be changed up until 10 days prior to the game which leaves the Egyptian Federation with only eight days to submit the name of the new stadium.

Ismaili offer to host the game

The official website of the Ismaili club has published an offer to host the game at the 'Ismailia' stadium that was one of the stadiums used during the African Cup of Nations competition that was held in Cairo last year. The website expressed the readiness of the stadium pointing out that hosting such huge events is not new to the city or the stadium.

However, Egyptian minister of sport, Ashraf Sobhi, said that the Cairo International stadium has now become the most likely to host the event that was postponed on several occasions for various reasons, confirming that approval from the interior ministry is expected to make the decision final.
