The last time the two sides met was at the World Cup two years ago in Russia. Then the Mexican squad prevailed 2-1 with Carlos Vela and Javier Hernández as scorers.

A different South Korea with Paulo Bento?

After that defeat, Paulo Bento was appointed as South Korea’s coach and the team advanced to the quarter-finals at the 2019 Asian Cup, where they lost to eventual champions Qatar. However, they won their third EAFF-E1 title against Japan last year.

In-form Mexico team want another win against the Asians

Before their encounter in Russia, Mexico defeated the Asian side 4-0 in a friendly played in 2014, and won 3-1 in the group stage at the World Cup in France back in 1998.

El Tri, who have qualified for 16 World Cups in their history, previously beat Guatemala (3-0) and the Netherlands (3-0) and drew with Algeria (2-2)

Ahead of Saturday's match, Rodolfo Pizarro has joined the Mexican team together with former Barcelona player Jonathan dos Santos, while Alan Pulido is ruled out due to quarantine restrictions. Coach Gerardo Martino won't have Andrés Guardado, Érick Gutiérrez, Javier Hernández and José Juan Macías, all unavailable.

On the other hand, Guillermo Ochoa returns to the team after injury, while Hirving Lozano will likely play again for Mexico after more than one year without doing so.

Meanwhile, Bento will try to surprise El Tri with Son Heung-min and Hwang Hee-chan up front. The Portuguese coach will also be able to call upon Freiburg’s Kwon Chang-hoon and Holstein Kiel's Lee Jae-sung in midfield, although they will most likely miss out againt Qatar because of quarantine restrictions upon their return to Germany from Austria.

It won’t be easy for Bento to field a strong XI, since Kim Jin-su recently tested positive for coronavirus and Hong Chul is also out with a knee injury. Moreover, Lee Yong and Kim Young-gwon are also out, while Beijing Guoan haven’t released Kim Min-jae for the international friendly because of the global pandemic.
