Real Madrid: Sergio Ramos stages contract press conference U-turn

Amid stalled negotiations with Real Madrid over a new contract, Sergio Ramos has staged a U-turn and will now not be speaking to the media from the Spain camp in Seville on Monday.

Ramos fears Real Madrid talk will distract from Spain preparations

As part of a press conference held in the run-up to La Roja's UEFA Nations League match against Germany on Tuesday, national captain Ramos had been expected to discuss the talks over his Madrid deal, which expires at the end of the season.

However, the 34-year-old has now decided against facing the press, fearing that the news conference’s sole focus would be on his Madrid contract and would distract attention from what is a crunch Nations League clash for Spain.

After drawing with Switzerland on Saturday - a game that saw Ramos become Europe's most-capped player but miss two penalties - Luis Enrique's side now need to beat the Germans at the Estadio La Cartuja to qualify for the Nations League finals.

Midfielder Rodri Hernández is set to talk to the media instead of Ramos.

Real Madrid chief also cancels media appointment

Meanwhile, Real Madrid president Florentino Pérez was also due to speak publicly about Ramos’ contract situation in an interview with Spanish radio station Cadena SER later on Monday, but the indications are that the Bernabéu chief will also no longer be talking to the media.

Real Madrid unwilling to meet Ramos' contract demands

Negotiations between club skipper Ramos and Madrid are currently deadlocked, with the player asking for a two-year extension and Los Blancos only willing to offer a one-year deal with an optional further 12 months.

The defender will be free to talk to other clubs from 1 January if an agreement has not been reached by then. As has been reported by AS, Ligue 1 champions Paris Saint-Germain are ready to offer him a three-year contract worth an annual 20 million euros net - eight million more than he currently earns.
