The Last of Us Part II, Hades and Ghost of Tsushima lead the list of nominees for The Game Awards 2020. The winners will be known on 10 December night.
The Game Awards is the event that recognizes (and celebrates!) the best productions, creators, publishers, and artists from the video game industry (in an Oscars style). The nominees for the 2020 edition were announced on 18 November and the ceremony to reveal the winners will take place on 10 December. Besides the awards, it will showcase world premiere announcements and musical performances and it will be broadcast via live streaming from international locations in Los Angeles, London, and Tokyo.
The nominees have been selected across 30 categories voted for by more than 90 media outlets from all around the world. Among the categories, the one that gets most attention is the Game of the Year, which recognizes the industry's best title. In 2020, the six finalists in this grouping are:
Animal Crossing: New Horizons: a true hit for Nintendo (selling more than 26 million units). A family-friendly game that allows users to become citizens of a remote island where they co-exist with their neighbors while investing time in fishing, gardening, and bug catching in order to get money to pay the mortgage to the raccoon owner of the island (as strange as it may seem, it is true).
Doom Eternal: the new and refreshing iteration of the classic FPS franchise returned in 2020 with a new title that imbues the player with the duty of killing all kinds of demons in Hell.
Final Fantasy VII Remake: one the most beloved titles in video game history had its anticipated 2020 remake. And it turned out to be a breath of air fresh due to its renewed, modern, and visual combat system and the way it deploys its narrative to engage with the older players that already knew what happened in the classic title from 1997.
Ghost of Tsushima: a new exclusive franchise for Sony, a new success both in user and critical response. The title set in Japan in the late 13th century during the first Mongol invasion of Japan, follows Jin Sakai, a samurai who has to try to defeat the invaders using stealth and katana skills. Seven nominations have been achieved by the game in this announcement.
Hades: an indie game made it to the finals! Hades is the latest title (and probably the best) developed by Supergiant Games, an indie studio known for its titles such as Bastion, Transistor, and Pyre. It's a rogue-like action role-playing video game where players control Zagreus, the son of Hades, trying to escape from the Underworld helped by the Olympian gods. Each run is different the death is far more than just failing: is a chance to improve, get better stats, and also discover new parts of its story. It has been nominated in eight award categories.
The Last of Us Part II: probably, the most ambitious game made by Sony in terms of visuals and impact. The sequel to one of the most beloved titles from PS3 and PS4 and an outstanding piece of art due to its technical aspects, its storytelling, and its renewed gameplay. A shocking story about revenge, love, grief, and empathy in an apocalyptic world where the infected creatures that appear are a lesser threat compared to humans. The Naughty Dog masterpiece achieved 10 nominations including Game of the Year, game directing, art directing, narrative and performance for voice actors Ashley Johnson and Laura Bailey.
