Real Madrid - Atletico Madrid: stats ahead of Bernabeu derby
Real Madrid host Atletico Madrid at the Bernabeu on Saturday as Zinedine Zidane and Diego Simeone lead the sides out in a 167th meeting in LaLiga.
Atlético Madrid and Real Madrid have faced each other 287 times over the last 114 years since the first meeting between the sides in the Madrid regional championship in 1906 (166 in LaLiga, 42 in the Copa del Rey, four in the league cup, three in the Spanish Super Cup, 62 in regional league and cup championships, nine in the European Cup and one in the European Super Cup). Alongside the Barcelona derby (261 fixtures) it is the most-played fixture in Spanish football history.
Real Madrid have won 148 of those games with 68 draws and 71 victories for Atlético. In total, there have been 859 goals, 499 for Real Madrid and 360 for Atlético. The top scorers in the Madrid derby are: Cristiano Ronaldo (22), Santiago Bernabéu (17), Alfredo Di Stéfano (17), Santillana (15), Puskas (13), Emilio Butragueño (12), Paco Campos (12/ATM), Adrián Escudero (11/ATM) and Raúl (11).
Sergio Ramos' record appearance
Real Madrid captain Sergio Ramos will make his 43rd overall appearance in the Madrid derby on Saturday, making him the player with the most capital city derby games in history. He currently shares that statistic with Manolo Sanchís and Paco Gento. Ramos and Karim Benzema (34 games) are the only active players in the top 10 with Koke (29 games) Atlético's highest appearance-maker in 18th on the list.
Last 15 Madrid derbies in LaLiga
For 14 years the Madrid derby was a rather one-sided affair but the arrival of Diego Simeone shifted the balance back towards the red and white half of the capital. Real Madrid have won just four of the last 15 Liga derbies stretching back to 2013 and remarkably three of those victories were away. Zinedine Zidane has only once overseen a Liga win against Atlético in the Bernabéu - in the last Madrid derby, a 1-0 Real Madrid win in February courtesy of a Karim Benzema strike.
Simeone's records against Real Madrid
With Diego Simeone on the bench, Atlético have played Real Madrid 32 times in all competitions with nine victories, 10 draws and 13 losses. El Cholo holds the record for most games against Real Madrid as manager of Atlético Madrid ahead of Luis Aragonés (30). In 17 Liga games, Simeone has won four, lost six and carved out seven draws, all but one of them by a scoreline of 0-0 or 1-1.
