David Beckham to take a more active role at Inter Miami

Inter Miami CF fell short of David Beckham's expectations in its inaugural season after losing in the penalty shootout in the the first game of the MLS Cup playoffs against fellow expansion side Nashville SC. Now, moving forward, the co-owner is expected to be more involved in sporting decisions for their second season in MLS.

According to multiple sources, Inter Miami is undergoing a front office restructuring and Beckham will be taking a more active role for the 2021 campaign. One of the big changes this off-season was the departure of Sporting Director Paul McDonough, while fifteen players were also let go.

Diego Alonso’s future is uncertain

Beckham knows what it takes to win the MLS Cup so for him the team didn’t meet the expectations in their inaugural season, with the future of coach Diego Alonso still up in the air. Inter Miami lost their first five games and finished in 10th place in the Eastern Conference.

Due to the coronavirus pandemic, Beckham wasn’t as involved as he had wanted to be this season and was forced to follow the team from his base in England. During the season, he would post videos and photos of himself watching the games in the middle of the night due to the time difference and after losing 3-0 against Nashville SC, sources said he was extremely disappointed, particularly after bringing in Gonzalo Higuaín and Blaise Matuidi when the 2020 season resumed following pandemic-enforced suspension.

The club is currently determining whether Diego Alonso is the right man for the job before the 2021 season begins in mid-March. So far Inter Miami has decided to renew the contract of Brek Shea and has acquired full-back Patrick Seagrist in a trade with New York Red Bulls.
