New England Patriots and Cam Newton expected to part ways

Prior to the beginning of the 2020 NFL season Tom Brady signed with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers after 20 seasons with the New England Patriots. The 43-year-old quarterback won six SuperBowl rings with the franchise from Massachusetts and to replace Brady they signed Cam Newton on a one-year contract worth $1.05 million.

The former Carolina Panthers quarterback failed to lead the Patriots to the playoffs after the end of the 2020 regular season, ending a streak of 11 years. The last time the New England franchise missed the postseason was in 2008 after ending with 11 wins and 5 losses, becoming the second team in the modern era to miss the playoffs with that record.

After 16 weeks, Cam Newton ended the regular season with 221 completions in 338 attempts with 5 touchdowns and 10 interceptions. According to journalist Adam Schefter from ESPN, the Patriots will not re-sign Newton and they are already in search of a new quarterback for the 2021 campaign.

Newton will become a free agent next year and leaves New England with a record of 7-9. One of the highlights of his year with the Patriots was running 49 yards in the 28-17 victory over the New York Jets, breaking the record for the longest run by a QB in the franchise's history.
