Draw time ......

The new Adidas Context 21 match ball is presented (whihc will be the official match-ball for the rest of the Copa) as we're introduced to the four individuals who will pick the balls.... the UD Ibiza club captain, head of media relations at Real Madrid, Emilio Buitragueño.

Ahead of the draw, a final reminder of the 32 teams in today's third round draw:

Supercopa participants: Real Madrid, Barcelona, Real Sociedad & Athletic.

1a División. Villarreal, Sevilla, Valladolid, Elche, Levante, Granada, Betis, Alavés, Osasuna, Valencia, Eibar & Cádiz.

2a División. Alcorcón, Almería, Leganés, Rayo, Espanyol, Tenerife, Fuenlabrada, Málaga, Sporting & Girona.

Segunda B. Córdoba, Ibiza, Navalcarnero, Cornellà, Alcoyano & Peña Deportiva.

We're live in Las Rozas at the Spanish FA headquarters and our host confirms that today's draw will be non-presencial (ie there are no club representatives present) as a consequence of the pandemic. Just four representatives from some of the 2B sides in the competition who will draw the teams from the bowls.

A reminder that these third round games will be played on January 16 & 17 with the four Super Cup sides playing their fixtures on 20-21 January.

The Spanish FA (who oversee the running and governance of the Copa del Rey) have yet to learn from UEFA and their draw procedures tend to just be a tad drawn out and not the snappy affairs that we've been accustomed to when tuning in to Nyon in recent years .Having said that, I fully expect all third round fixtures to be known in approximately 45-50 minutes or so.

Six possible rivals from 2B await Real Madrid in the third round: A trip to Ibiza, Cordoba, Cornella, Alcoy or a short hop to Navalcarnero awaits Zidane's men.

Despite the elimination of At. Madrid and Getafe, there are still six sides from Madrid involved in the competition with top flight Real Madrid being joined by 2a division outfits Rayo Vallecano, Fuenlabrada Leganes and Alcorcon. Navalcanero fly the flag for lower league football. Club Deportivo Artistico Navalcarnero to give the football club their full name !

Ibiza

Better known for its beaches and vibrant nightlife as opposed to its footballing culture, the Balearic island of Ibiza will have two representatives in this third round with UD Ibiza and Peña Deportivo flying the flag for the 'white island'.

Less than 20' ahead of the draw.... a reminder of the 32 sides in today's Copa del Rey 3rd round draw:

Supercopa participants: Real Madrid, Barcelona, Real Sociedad & Athletic.

1a División. Villarreal, Sevilla, Valladolid, Elche, Levante, Granada, Betis, Alavés, Osasuna, Valencia, Eibar & Cádiz.

2a División. Alcorcón, Almería, Leganés, Rayo, Espanyol, Tenerife, Fuenlabrada, Málaga, Sporting & Girona.

Segunda B. Córdoba, Ibiza, Navalcarnero, Cornellà, Alcoyano & Peña Deportiva.

Eibar

Eibar also squeaked through with an extra time win (3-4) over Las Rozas CF (2B). The Basque side were cruising 0-3 but three goals in six minutes from the Madrid side saw the tie head to extra time.

2B Galician side Pontevedra took LaLiga's Cadiz to a penalty shoot-out last night at the Estadio Pasaron with the Andalusian side ultimately prevailing from the spot to advance with keeper David Gil the hero

Word is coming through that sadly, veteran crooner Rod Stewart has been snowed-in at Edinburgh and will be unable to make today's Copa draw in Madrid.

Cup draw fans will be deprived of this artistry : )

Simeone

Atlético Madrid, Celta Vigo, Getafe and last night SD Huesca were the major victims of 2nd round giant killing acts at the hands of Cornella, Ibiza, Córdoba and Alcoyano respectively.

We still have the small matter of the 2019/20 Copa del Rey final still to be played as the Covid-19 pandemic saw the Basque final between Real Sociedad and Athletic Club postponed indefinitely. The FA have earmarked 4 April as a final date but both involved teams have stated that they only want the game to take place with supporters present and are prepared to forfeit the match if this is not the case.

Copa del Rey dates

Round of 16: 27 January 2021

Quarter-finals: February 3 2021

Semi-finals: (Two legs: February 10 and 3 March)

Final:17 April in Seville.

All games at this stage are single leg matches with the ground of the smaller league side being the home venue. All four Spanish Super Cup sides (Madrid, Barça, Real Sociedad and Athletic) will be pitted with an away trip to one of the 2B clubs.

Third Round Copa del Rey dates

Games will be played on January 16 & 17 with the four Super Cup sides playing their fixtures on 20-21 January

The remaining participants hail from La Liga: Villarreal, Sevilla, Valladolid, Elche, Levante, Granada, Betis, Alavés, Osasuna, Valencia, Eibar & Cádiz.

along with Segunda División sides: Alcorcón, Almería, Leganés, Rayo Vallecano, Espanyol, Tenerife, Fuenlabrada, Málaga, Sporting & Girona

Super Cup

The four Spanish Super Cup participants: Real Madrid, Barcelona, Real Sociedad & Athletic enter the competition at this stage after securing byes from Rounds 1 and 2. The 2021 Super Cup will be staged next week in a series of venues in Andalucia and not Saudi Arabia due to ongoing pandemic prevention measures.

Córdoba, Ibiza, Navalcarnero, Alcoyano & Peña Deportiva are the other semi-professional sides to progress to this Round of 32.

32 sides remain in contention looking for a place in the 18 April final which will be played at the La Cartuja stadium in Seville. Six sides from Spain's 2B (third tier) remain in the competition with UE Cornella making the headlines earlier this week for their elimination of LaLiga leaders At. Madrid
