Mbappé: Liverpool "favourites" ahead of Real Madrid to land PSG star
According to French media reports, Liverpool have overtaken Real Madrid and are now in pole position to land PSG star Kylian Mbappé.
Kylian Mbappé’s future has been one of the major talking points in world football. The PSG superstar’s contract expires in 2022 and indications are that he will not sign a new deal at Parc des Princes.
Real Madrid will go to all lengths to ensure Mbappé forms part of their project from next summer. However, securing the world’s most sought-after player (a title he can perhaps share with Erling Haaland, Madrid’s target for 2022), will not be an easy task. Aside from having to break the piggy bank to pay the player’s massive transfer fee, Madrid also face tough competition from some of Europe’s other elite clubs, especially Liverpool.
The Reds have also been heavily linked with the Paris-born striker. And according to French media sources, the Premier League champions have now overtaken Real Madrid as the favourites to sign him.
Speaking on Canal Plus’ Late Football Club programme, well-known journalist Geoffroy Garétier claimed that Liverpool are now in pole position to sign the PSG forward.

Liverpool could let Salah go for Mbappé
It is no secret that Jurgen Klopp is a big admirer of Mbappé, but the operation could be complicated by the fact that Liverpool already have a stellar front line made up of Sadio Mané, Firmino and Mohamed Salah, none of whom would be willing to be consigned to a bench role.
However, in France they say that Liverpool are willing to make Mbappé the undisputed leader of the Anfield project, and, as such, are willing to give up one member of their potent attacking trident in order to make the necessary room for the French international.
With regards to the main candidate of the three, all eyes will be on Mo Salah, who, in an exclusive interview with AS, has already suggested that he is open to a move to Real Madrid or Barcelona.
If PSG’s renewal talks with Mbappé do not advance, Liverpool’s negotiations with Salah, whose contract ends in 2023, could follow a similar course.
"It is a difficult question, right now I can say that everything is in the hands of the club," revealed Salah when asked by AS about his future at Anfield.
Mbappé: "Soon we will have to make a decision"
For his part, Mbappé is taking time to reflect before making the big decision on his future, as he himself revealed last week when discussing his negotiations with PSG.
“I want to think about what I want to do in the next few years, where I want to be, this is how my thinking goes. But it is true that soon we will have to make a decision,” said the Frenchman.
“I do not want to sign a contract [with PSG] and say a year later that I want to leave. If I sign it, it is to stay, and that deserves time for reflection.”
If one thing is clear, it is that time is pressing and it is particularly against PSG. Madrid and Liverpool will continue to watch and wait.
