Mexican clubs have never beaten European or South American teams in the Club World Cup

Tigres UANL defeated Los Angeles FC in the 2020 CONCACAF Champions League final back in December to book a trip to the 2021 FIFA Club World Cup. This is the first time in the team's history that they will play in this tournament and their first match will be on 4 February against Ulsan Hyundai at the Al Rayyan Stadium in Qatar.

Mexican clubs have a balanced record against the winners from the AFC Champions League. In nine matchups the Liga MX teams have won five games and lost four. The last time a Mexican team lost against the AFC Champions League winner was Cruz Azul in 2014 when they were defeated by Auckland City.

The history of Mexican clubs in the CWC

Tigres will try to make history in their debut and do what other Liga MX teams have not achieved before. FIFA implemented a new format in 2006 and since then all of the Mexican clubs have yet to beat European or South American teams in 14 editions of the tournament.

The only Liga MX side that actually made a difference was Necaxa because in 2000 they defeated Manchester United and Real Madrid. After that Club América, Monterrey CF, Atlante and Cruz Azul have lost to the the winners of the UEFA Champions League.

Mexican clubs have mainly defeated the winners of the CAF Champions League in the Club World Cup. In 14 matchups they have a record of nine wins and five defeats. The last Liga MX club that lost against a team from Africa was Chivas in 2018 when they were defeated by Espérance Sportive de Tunis.
