Club América docked victory and three points after Viñas investigation
Federico Viñas travelled with the Eagles, warmed up and was on the bench for the entire match, but he had not actually been included in the squad.
Club América defeated Atlas 2-0 on 20 February for matchday 7 of the 2021 Guardianes tournament. In their squad line-up for the match the Mexican giants did not include striker Federico Viñas... but he made the trip to the Jalisco stadium, warmed up with the rest of the team prior to the beginning of the match and sat down on the bench the entire 90 minutes.
So on Monday the Atlas complained to the Liga MX demanding Club América be penalized for improper alignment. And a little after 24 hours analyzing the case, the league decided to punish the Mexican giants by taking away the victory and the points they thought they'd earned on matchday 7.
The final result for the record books then is a 3-0 defeat for the Eagles against Atlas, making this Santiago Solari’s second defeat of the tournament, even if it did not happen on the pitch. América dropped to third place with 13 points and Cruz Azul took the lead with 15. There are still 10 games left of the regular season of the 2021 Guardianes tournament and América has time to reclaim the top of the table, roster mishaps notwithstanding.
Now they will have to turn the page and focus on their next league match. The Eagles will host Pachuca, the worst team of the league and they have yet to win a game this tournament, on Saturday 27 February.
