US STIMULUS CHECKS

Third stimulus check: how can I check my payment status in IRS portal?

If you still haven’t received your $1,400 stimulus check, you can find out why it might have been delayed, what to do if it is and when to expect it with the IRS app.

Third stimulus check: how can I check my payment status in IRS portal?

According to government data, an estimated 160 million US households will receive economic aid – around $400 billion has been set aside for direct payments of $1,400 to individuals earning up to $75,000 per annum and married couples with joint incomes of up to $150,000. Those who earn over that amount, but less than $80,000 per individual or $160,000 per couple, will receive reduced amounts.

This time, adult dependents over the age of 17, college students and disabled people will be eligible for a stimulus payment – which can be claimed by a family member. Individuals or at least one member of the household, for those filing jointly, must have a valid Social Security number (SSN). Apart from US citizens, also entitled to payments are non-US citizens who are in possession of a SSN who live and work in the US. US citizens who live abroad and residents of any US territories will also be eligible to receive an impact payment. This third stimulus payment will be determined on income earned during 2019 or 2020 - providing a tax return for last year has been filed. Qualifying dependents need to be claimed during that tax year.

No action required in most cases

Most citizens will receive their $1,400 stimulus payment automatically, without having to take any action. Those who bank account details are on file at the Internal Revenue Center (IRS) will receive their payment via direct deposit paid straight into their bank account. The IRS has notified that the first payments started going out on 12 March 2021 with further batches to go out in the next few weeks, either by direct deposit or through the mail as a paper check or EIP debit card. To receive your payment through the post, the IRS will need a valid address to mail it to.

If you have not received your stimulus payment, the IRS request that you do not phone them to find out where it is but to wait 21 days, after which, if it still has not arrived, you can use their free, online Get My Payment tool which will show the status of your stimulus check. Where’s My Refund and Online Account will not provide the status of your Economic Impact Payments. Get My Payment is the only option available to get your payment status.

Getting your stimulus payment if you have recently changed address

To start using the Get My Payment tool, you will be asked a series of questions to verify your identity for security reasons. You will be able to log into the Get My Payment tool for a maximum of five times within a period of 24 hours. If you have recently moved home, you will need to update your address with the IRS – this can be done in several ways:

By filing your tax return for 2020 (before the 15 April deadline)

By filling in Form 8822 and sending it by mail to the address shown on the form

In writing, the IRS will need to know your full name, old and new addresses, social security number, individual taxpayer identification number, or employer identification number – the letter will also require your signature

Status of your stimulus check

When you use the Get My Payment tool, you will see one of three messages

Payment Status: A payment has been processed, a payment date is available and payment is to be sent either by direct deposit or mail. Note: mail means you may be issued an EIP Card or a check.

Or You’re eligible, but a payment has not been processed and a payment date is not yet available. It will not show the amount of your 2021 Economic Impact Payment.

Payment Status Not Available: We haven't yet processed your payment or you're not eligible for a payment.

Need More Information: Your payment was returned to the IRS because the Postal Service was unable to deliver it. Only people who get this message can use the tool to give us bank account information.

Get My Payment updates once per day, usually overnight and sometimes may be down for maintenance during the early hours of the morning.
