REAL MADRID

Vinicius set for key role in Vigo

Last season Benzema struck late on in Balaídos for Real Madrid. In 2018, against Celta B, Vinicius scored one of the goals of the season in Segunda B.

After a strong performance midweek against Atalanta and in the absence of Eden Hazard, Vinicius has become a key forward for Zinedine Zidane. His energetic display in Madrid's 3-1 victory over the Serie A side has him in contention for a starting role against Celta on Saturday. Marco Asensio remains doubtful ahead of the LaLiga clash and Rodrygo's lack of gametime will likely see his compatriot get the nod on the left wing in Vigo on Saturday.

The 20-year-old's two previous visits to the Galician city were successful. In 2018, he scored his best goal in a Madrid shirt, on this particular day it was with Real Madrid Castilla in Segunda B. It was on 21 October of that year when Vinicius fired a direct free kick into the back of the Celta goal. Just two minutes later, the former Flamengo winger was sent off by referee González González, who decided to show him a second yellow for diving in the box.

Last season, playing for Madrid's first team, he was millimetres away from making it 1-0 but Karim Benzema got the final touch on a day that saw Madrid run out 3-1 winners.

Vinicius has been named in Madrid's starting eleven in Vigo. After Saturday's LaLiga fixture, he will be able to take advantage of a break with the upcoming international fixtures and have one eye on Eibar and the first leg of the Champions League against Liverpool. CONMEBOL have suspended the South American international fixtures and therefore the young Brazilian will stay in Madrid with Zidane.
