The start-up projects that were launched under the umbrella of the innovation programs of the Supreme Committee for Delivery and Legacy (the body responsible for projects and initiatives for the FIFA World Cup scheduled in Qatar in 2022) continue to be announced, which contributes to supporting the sustainability goals of the next World Cup, as well as enriching the fans' experience during the tournament.

In this context, Dr. Tariq Al-Ansari, a member of the ‘MoistChar’ team who participated in Challenge 22, praised the efforts of those in charge of the program and their contribution in starting the production of biochar in laboratories, noting that he and his team had invented the idea of extracting this product from biological waste.

Al Ansari said: "Adding biochar to the soil contributes to improving its quality and capacity to retain water itself, thus enhancing Qatari efforts in the area of food security. That is why the importance of the idea of ‘MoistChar’ is evident in supporting what is known as the circular economy, which is a sustainable economic system focused on extracting waste from materials, commodities and energy and putting it to the best use possible; and reducing consumption, waste and emissions.

“In addition to that, the circular economy contributes to maximizing the use of all raw materials, minerals, energy and resources in various forms, as well as promoting the principle of recycling and manufacturing.”

As for how MoisChar will contribute to enhancing the fans’ experience at the World Cup, Al Ansari said: “Although ‘MoistChar’ is not embodied in a product with which fans and visitors interact directly, we are absolutely certain that this biochar will inspire many of them to adapt a more sustainable lifestyle, as well as encourage them to think about all aspects of the sustainability aspects provided at Qatar 2022, since the main reason for our participation in Challenge 22 lies in our aspiration to leave our mark on the legacy of the event. In addition, our is to contribute to the achievement of Qatari objectives in the field of sustainability.”
