Tax Filing 2021: will IRS extend deadline again?
We've already seen the Treasury Department and Internal Revenue Service extend the federal income tax filing due date, but could this be moved again?
With many millions of direct deposits from President Joe Biden's $1.9 trillion relief package already having arrived in the bank accounts of Americans, the Inland Revenue Services have confirmed that they are extending the period of filing for 2020 tax returns.
IRS filing date extension confirmed
The original date for filing your taxes was 15 April 2021 but the deadline has been extended to 17 May in order to "help taxpayers navigate the unusual circumstances related to the pandemic."

Once this change to the date was announced, IRS Commissioner Chuck Rettig issued a statement:
"This continues to be a tough time for many people, and the IRS wants to continue to do everything possible to help taxpayers navigate the unusual circumstances related to the pandemic, while also working on important tax administration responsibilities.
"Even with the new deadline, we urge taxpayers to consider filing as soon as possible, especially those who are owed refunds. Filing electronically with direct deposit is the quickest way to get refunds, and it can help some taxpayers more quickly receive any remaining stimulus payments they may be entitled to."
Individual taxpayers can now also postpone federal income tax payments for the 2020 tax year due on 15 April 15, 2021, though to 17 May (2021), without penalties and interest, regardless of the amount owed.
There is nothing suggested, as yet, that the deadline will be extended further although, as has been the case for several months, little is set in stone during the ever-changing situation surrounding the pandemic.
