Chivas and Santos share points at the Akron stadium

If Chivas wants to make it to the wild card round of the 2021 Guardianes tournament they have to start winning games. For matchday 13 the team from Guadalajara hosted Santos Laguna at the Akron stadium and they failed to earn the three points. Jesús Ocejo scored the first goal of the game for the visiting team in the 31st minute.

There were very few dangerous plays during the first 45 minutes of the game and Santos would take the lead in the first half. When the second half began, the home team went full offensive in search of that equalizer. Just a minute in and Eduardo Torres shot from just inside the box and Santos goalkeeper Acevedo saved his goal.

Split points and complicate their future

In the 63rd minute the referee awarded a penalty kick for Chivas, but after VAR checked the play it was overruled due to a clear offside. Then in the 71st minute ‘JJ’ Macías fired a header, but the ball went wide. A minute later, ‘Chicote’ Calderón hit the crossbar and Chivas started to get frustrated with the clock ticking down.

It was not until the 74th minute that ‘Canelo’ Angulo fired a beautiful volley to level the game. Chivas had the opportunity to take the lead with Uriel Antuno, but his shot got deflected by a defender and that ended the game. Now Chivas has to travel to Mexico City to face Cruz Azul on 10 April.

Currently the team from Guadalajara is in 15th place with 13 points and a record of 2-7-3. Chivas has four games left to make a late push to book a ticket for the playoffs this tournament, but if they don’t beat Cruz Azul, the current leaders, they can say goodbye to their season.
