Felipe Mora scores the first goal of the Concachampions
Marathón and Portland Timbers drew 2-2 in the first game of the 2021 CONCACAF Champions League at the Olímpico Metropolitano stadium.
The 2021 CONCACAF Champions League is the 13th edition under its new format and Marathón (Honduras) and Portland Timbers played on Tuesday in the first game of the tournament. This was the first leg of the round of 16 and it was held at the Olímpico Metropolitano stadium.
Portland struck first
Felipe Mora was in charge of scoring the first goal of this edition in the 35th minute to give the MLS side the lead. The striker from Chile received a cross from Van Rankin and he was able to control it and rifled the ball with his left foot to find the back of the net. The home team would not sit back and relax because four minutes later Brayan Castillo equalized the game before the half.
During the second half Denovan Torres scored an own goal to give Portland the lead for the second time in the game. But once again the home team was able to bounce back and Marlon Ramírez would find the back of the net. The game ended 2-2 and the second leg is scheduled for 13 April at Providence Park.
Mora didn’t meet the expectations in his first year in MLS
This is Felipe Mora’s second season with Portland and he is looking to bounce back after a disappointing year during the 2020 Major League Soccer season. The striker from Chile was only able to score seven goals and give three assists in his debut year in MLS. But he was brought to the Timbers because he was a goal scoring machine during his time in the Liga MX. He played with Cruz Azul and Pumas between 2017 and 2019 and he tallied 27 goals in 84 appearances.
