Raja boss Jamal Sellami resigns ahead of Pyramids clash
The Moroccan club thanked Jamal Sellami after officially announcing his departure despite the team's good run in the Confederation Cup.
Moroccan outfit Raja Casablanca have announced the resignation of head coach Jamal Sellami issuing a statement in which they thanked their former boss and wished him good luck in the future.
Sellami had been in charge of the team since 2019, steering them into last year's CAF Champions League semi-finals, where they went down to Zamalek, who finished runners-up. However, Raja Casablanca under Sellami have endured an early elimination from the Champions League this year, which is why they are now in the Confederation Cup.
The 50-year-old coach's resignation comes as a surprise as the team is enjoying a successful winning streak in the Confederations Cup, having achieved three victories out of the first three group stage games to secure the top spot in Group D, where they are competing with Pyramids FC of Egypt, Zambian Nkana, and Namungo FC of Tanzania.
Sellami's departure might negatively impact the squad; as his exit comes just two days ahead of their crucial fixture against last year's Confederation Cup runners up Pyramids FC in Cairo, after Raja managed to claim a 2-0 victory in Casablanca last Sunday.
Raja are currently second in the Moroccan league standings with 19 points earned from 11 games played, behind Wydad who top the charts having claimed 25 points out of 10 games.
