Matías Pellegrini on his way out of Inter Miami

Inter Miami has one too many Designated Players and they need to get rid of one to meet Major League Soccer roster compliance guidelines by 16 April.

Matías Pellegrini on his way out of Inter Miami

Inter Miami CF is entering their second year in Major League Soccer with several changes compared to their debut season. Phil Neville was appointed as the new manager and he has been working alongside co-owner and friend David Beckham to improve the roster ahead of the start of the 2021 MLS regular season.

One too many DPs

Earlier this week the teams’ sporting director confirmed that Blaise Matuidi will be registered as a designated player for the 2021 MLS season. The problem with that news is that the French World Cup winner became the fourth Designated Player behind Rodolfo Pizarro, Matías Pellegrini and Gonzalo Higuaín. According to the MLS roster compliance guidelines a team can only have three DPs.

So The Athletic reported on Tuesday that the solution to this problem would be if Matías Pellegrini can be reclassified into the U22 player initiative that Major League Soccer is starting in the 2021 season. This means that an MLS club can sign up to three young players that are 22 or younger and they have no limits on acquisition fees.

Since the 21-year-old striker is on loan from Estudiantes, the Miami franchise needs to use their allocation money to make the move permanent and reclassify his contract. But it appears that the team co-owned by Beckham is not willing to make that move and they have until 16 April to meet MLS roster compliance guidelines.

On his way to Canada

Unfortunately the strikers’ salary makes him ineligible to enter the U22 player initiative and according to journalist Jeff Reuter, "Inter Miamic CF has contacted several MLS teams’ as they hope to find a trade partner for Matías Pellegrini." One of the teams that seems eager to sign him is Montreal Impact and it will be via a trade.
