Barcelona 5-2 Getafe: as it happened

Match report: Barcelona 5-2 Getafe

Reuters - Lionel Messi scored twice as Barcelona crushed Getafe 5-2 on Thursday to stay in the hunt for the La Liga title.

Messi gave Barca an early lead with the help of a pin-point pass from Sergio Busquets but Getafe pulled level with an own goal by Clement Lenglet.

The visitors then conceded a calamitous own goal when Sofian Chakla's backpass deceived keeper David Soria and trickled over the line.

Messi extended Barca's lead before halftime, hitting the post then following up to net from a tight angle and to move on to 25 La Liga goals for the 12th season in a row.

But the Catalans slowed down in the second half and Turkish forward Enes Unal made for an exciting finish by converting a penalty in the 69th minute following a VAR review for a foul by Ronald Araujo.

Getafe had a couple of half-chances to level but Uruguayan defender Araujo made amends for his foul on Unal by heading in Messi's corner in the 87th minute to effectively kill the game.

Barca earned a penalty in added time but Messi surrendered the chance to score a hat-trick and handed the ball to Antoine Griezmann who slammed in the spot-kick.

The win took Barca back up to third place on 68 points, five behind leaders Atletico Madrid but with a game in hand.

"It was a very strange game but the team knew how to get the job done and win which is the important thing," said Araujo.

"We suffered a little bit in the second half, we could have been more comfortable. Every game we have left is like a final and every team will give everything."

Getafe gave Koeman's side a guard of honour for their recent Copa del Rey triumph but the visitors also wore T-shirts saying "Earn It", criticising Barcelona's decision to sign up to the breakaway European Super League.

"The news had a big impact on me, any clubs want to compete in Europe and we want to earn it on the pitch," said Getafe's Angel Rodriguez.

"We're a humble club who played in the Europa League so obviously I'm totally against it."

Ronald Araújo post-match: "I'm happy with the win and the goal. We played well, although we suffered at times too. We have 8 finals left. Another 3 points is important for our objective. Messi tells me to go to the near post and that's what happened for my goal."

A convincing win for Barca, who stay in the LaLiga title race. Seven goals at Camp Nou, although the second half didn't produce many chances as Barca dominated large spells of play.

FT: Barcelona 5-2 Getafe

And that's that!

Griezmann scores from the spot!

93

GOOOOOOOOAAAAAAAALLLLLLL GRIEZMANN

Chakla fouls Griezmann in the box.

93

Penalty for Barcelona!

90

There will be 3 minutes added-on at the end of the 90.

89

That's the goal that Barca needed. Hardly a way back now for Getafe.

Fantastic header at the front post from the young Uruguayan from Messi's inswinging corner.

ARAÚJO!!! 4-2

87

GOOOOOOOOOOOOAAAAAAALLLLLLL BARCA!!!

86

Djene heads it out for a Barcelona corner.

Barca free-kick! Messi stands over it...

84

Just over 5 minutes to go at Camp Nou. Barca haven't been able to close this one out. Getafe are still in it. 3-2

With Barcelona now holding onto their 3-2 lead, Koeman cuts a nervous figure on the sideline.

80

Mingueza is taken off, walks up to Koeman and says "what happened?", Koeman says "luego hablamos" (we'll speak about it later)

78

Getafe work a right wing cross into the box, the header by Miranda is weak. An easy one for Ter Stegen. 3-1

76

Getafe change

OFF Rodriguez

ON Miranda

I'm not sure if that Mingueza change has come directly from Koeman's anger towards the defender in the last 5 minutes. No doubt he'll be questioned about it after the game.

OFF Mingueza

ON Umtiti

74

Umtiti is coming in for Barcelona. The French defender has been linked with a summer move to Russia, with Zenit reportedly interested.

71

Ronald Koeman is having a proper go at Oscar Mingueza, his own player. He's not happy with something!

Barcelona 3-2 Getafe

69

Getafe are back in it!

Enes Unal buries his penalty past Ter Stegen.

GOOOOOOAAAAALLLLLL GETAFE!!!

Araújo gets booked for the foul.

IT'S A PENALTY!!!

Penalty for Getafe.

Oh wait! We're going to VAR!

67

Unal goes down in the box. Is it a penalty? The referee says no!

Sergi Roberto got an hour under his belt tonight, important minutes in his return to full fitness after two months on the sidelines.

64

Barcelona change:

OFF Sergi Roberto

ON Francisco Trincao

64

Getafe have failed to really threaten Ter Stegen tonight.

62

Koeman's team are playing like Copa del Rey champions. Four goals in 12 minutes on Saturday saw them beat Athletic 4-0 in the Copa final. Their tails are up now and they will push Atletico, Real and Sevilla until the very end of the league.

Barcelona continue to dominate.

Barca have the perfect mix of experience and youth in their midfield with Busquets, De Jong and Pedri. Pedri's first season in Spain's top-flight has been outstanding. Still just 18, but plays like he's 28!

54

Barcelona with some very nice passages of play in the opening minutes of the second half. Remains 3-1.

This stat is already out of date - he now has 25!

Good play from Kubo down the left earns Getafe a corner.

Getafe make a triple change at the break.

HT: Barcelona 3-1 Getafe

45+1

Messi sends his free-kick curling high and wide, it passes everyone in the box.

45

Messi is playing on the right wing in the last few minutes. He's at his most dangerous cutting in onto his left foot. The Argentine has just been fouled doing just that. Another Barcelona free.

43

Barca are in total control now, playing high in Getafe's half.

40

Five minutes until the break. If Getafe concede another before half-time it's going to be a very difficult second 45.

38

Getafe did well to get back into the game. Unfortunately for Los Azulones, Messi is in the mood tonight.

25 goals for Messi in LaLiga!

34

Messi cracks a right-footed volley off the post, it comes back off the post for Messi to tap in from close range.

Goal: Messi

Assist: Post

Barcelona 3-1 Getafe

GOOOOOOOAAAAAAALLLLLLLLL MESSI

32

Foul on Messi. Damian Suárez collides with Messi. The Argentine comes out worse than the Uruguayan. Barca/Messi free.

Chakla passes it into his own net. Getafe keeper Soria comes out for it but Chakla misreads it and passes it into his own net. Huge mixup. Soria is livid. Chakla looks confused.

It's a Getafe shocker! Another own goal!

Barcelona 2-1 Getafe

27

GOOOOOAAAAAAAAALLLLLLLLL BARCA!!!

We're asking the same question, Sid.

24

It's all action! De Jong receives an excellent diagonal cross from Alba, the Dutchman let's it come across his shoulder, volley-crosses it across the goal but there's nobody there to get on the end of it.

23

You can't miss Cucurella down Getafe's left-wing. Getafe bought him from Barcelona last year after a superb opening season for Jose Bordalas. The lively winger has started well against his former club. 1-1

It's coming up to 22:30 in Barcelona. Koeman isn't very happy about the late kick-off times and went on a rant in his pre-match press conference.

20

Messi again! 4 shots now in the opening 20 minutes from the Barca skipper.

His volley from 18 yards is easily stopped by Soria.

Barcelona corner! Soria punches it away to nearly the halfway line.

That Dest for Mingueza hasn't happened yet. Mingueza is back on his feet. We'll see if he's able to carry on.

17

Getafe have reacted really well to going 1-0 down.

15

Messi!

Alba lays it off to the Argentine, whose strike goes high over Soria's bar.

13

It's a Lenglet OG! After some excellent play down the left from Getafe, involving Cucurella and Kubo.

Getafe equalise!!!

12

GOOOOOOAAAAAAAALLLLLLLL!!!!

GETAFE!!!

10

Mingueza is down. It doesn't look good. He spins on his knee when defending a Gefafe cross. Dest is warming up.

Messi has now scored 24 goals in LaLiga, two more than Getafe.

The Getafe players do their best to knock him over, he keeps going and going and buries his shot beyond Soria.

Super run and finish from Leo Messi.

Barcelona 1-0 Getafe

8

MESSSSSSIIIIIIIIII!!!!!!!

GOOOOOOOAAAAALLLLLLLLL

Watching the replay of Messi's hit, madre mia! first touch is superb, second comes off the bar.

Lenglet picks up an early booking for obstructing Iglesias.

5

Barca come agonisingly close to taking the lead. Messi quite unlucky with that one. Getafe relieved. That would have been the game plan out the window.

3

Messi!!!

His effort crashes off the bar, bounces on the line and heads out. 0-0

Sergi Roberto gets his first touch in over two months.

Sergi Roberto returns for FC Barcelona tonight.

The away side line up with La Masia talents Cucurella and Aleñá in their XI.

Barcelona are playing from left to right as we watch it!

We're underway!

Getafe's guard of honour for Barcelona, the Copa del Rey champions.

A LaLiga stat that grabbed our attention before the game was:

Messi: 23 goals

Getafe team news

Nyom suspended against Barcelona

As for Getafe, defender Allan Nyom will miss out on the game due to suspension after picking up his tenth booking of the league season. He will be replaced by Damián Suárez.

Cucho Hernández and Erick Cabaco continue to recover from injuries, while Carles Aleñà and Marc Cucurella will aim to impress against their current/former club.

Barcelona team news

Braithwaite injured, Messi and Griezmann up front

Ansu Fati and Philippe Coutinho are long-term injuries and aren't available for Koeman, while Martin Braithwaite is injured while training and won't play.

The good news for the Catalan team is that most of their injured players have recovered. Gerard Piqué played in the Copa del Rey final.

Messi's 23 league goals this season is more than the entire Getafe team combined, and he will form a strike partnership with Antoine Griezmann up front.

Kick-off is just over 15 minutes away in Barcelona.

Barça's strong home record

Barça know only too well that Getafe can be a tricky opponent, as they proved against Madrid, but at the same time Ronald Koeman’s men are on a 12-game unbeaten league run on home soil, winning five of their last six matches.

Meanwhile, José Bordalás’ squad are in 15th position, with 31 points, four away from the relegation zone. They haven’t won any of their last five La Liga matches, but four of them have ended in a draw.

LaLiga title race heats up

Tonight is a huge match for Barcelona, who are sitting in 4th but still in the title race in LaLiga.

Barcelona president Joan Laporta breaks silence: "The Super League is absolutely necessary"

SUPERLEAGUE | BARCELONA

Barcelona president Joan Laporta breaks silence: "The Super League is absolutely necessary"

FC Barcelona president Joan Laporta has broken his silence to express his support for the European Super League in spite of the backlash from the football community.

After new broke of a breakaway competition involving 12 top clubs at the weekend, the project which is headed by Florentino Pérez has foundered over the past couple of days - to the point where only Real Madrid and Barcelona remain. All of the other clubs who had originally signed up for the Super League have since backtracked and abandoned ship after buckling under pressure from UEFA, their fans and the UK government.

Florentino Pérez has tried to defend his project in two interviews given to Spanish media outlets this week, only to see his Super League dreams fall apart at the seams. Six English clubs were the first to leave, followed the three Italian clubs and a Spanish club. That leaves just Real Madrid and Barcelona hoping to continue running a competition that will run parallel to the Champions League.

Laporta's views on the Super League were only disclosed today. The Blaugrana president attended TV3 cameras at the Barcelona Open this morning. For Laporta, the Super League is “a necessity” but admitted that the final decision to whether Barça will continue in the project “is in the hands of the club members, as it should be”.

One of the conditions which Laporta gave Florentino before signing the document along with the other 11 clubs, was that the club's commitment to the project must be approved by club members at the next General Assembly for it to be made official.

Camp Nou is all set!

Agüero places Messi clause on Barcelona move

Sergio Agüero is keen on a move to Barcelona when he leaves Manchester City this summer, but only if his Argentina teammate Leo Messi remains at Camp Nou.

Sergio Agüero is out of contract at Manchester City this summer and will not be renewing his deal to remain under the tutelage of Pep Guardiola at the Etihad, sparking a scramble for the Argentina international’s signature among Premier League clubs and across Europe.

Agüero, 32, has been linked with several clubs including Juventus and PSG, but the former Atlético Madrid striker has a preference to join Barcelona. However, he has placed a condition on agreeing to a deal to play at Camp Nou and it is one that Barcelona president Joan Laporta has at the top of his to-do list this summer whether or not he pursues a deal for Agüero: the presence of Leo Messi.

The dramatic rise and swift fall of Europe's Super League

Plans for a Super League of Europe's top soccer clubs, which was drawn up in secrecy over several months, stunned fans, players and politicians when news about it broke on Sunday. Yet by Wednesday, the new league's last rites were already being read.

The intervening hours were filled with a cacophony of criticism stretching from the stands to the pitches, and from the dressing rooms right up to the corridors of political power.

Below is a timeline of the outcry that erupted between Sunday lunchtime, when news of the plan first emerged, until the project was effectively declared dead on Wednesday morning.

Barcelona release statement on European Super League

Earlier this evening, Barcelona issued the following statement regarding the European Super League:

"FC Barcelona shares the view of most major European football clubs, and even more so given the current socio-economic climate, that there is a need for structural reforms to guarantee the financial sustainability and feasibility of world football by improving the product that is offered to fans around the world and by consolidating and even increasing the fan base on which this sport is sustained, which is its mainstay and greatest strength."

Koeman hits out at football authorities as Super League fallout continues

Barcelona coach Ronald Koeman hit out on Wednesday at football's authorities as the fallout continued from now-abandoned plans to create a European Super League.

The Catalan side were one of 12 clubs who announced plans on Sunday to form the breakaway league, which has since collapsed after most members withdrew following intense criticism from fans and politicians.

"I agree with (Manchester City coach Pep) Guardiola when it comes to the number of games players have to play in over a season. It's too many, incredible," Koeman told a news conference.

"Everyone's talking about the Super League and the Champions League, but UEFA aren't paying any attention to the players about the number of games.

"The only thing they care about is money. In La Liga, it's the same. Look at the scheduling. Tomorrow we play at 10 p.m. - we need to protect the players."

The Dutchman also said that club president Joan Laporta had spoken to him about the Super League, but would not be drawn on Barca's participation. Full story

LaLiga title race resumes after big three burn bridges over Super League

After angering LaLiga by signing up to the European Super League, Real Madrid, Atlético Madrid and Barcelona continue the closest title race in Europe this week amid accusations of greed from the league's other clubs.

Real went top of the standings on Wednesday with a 3-0 win at Cádiz after getting a frosty reception from the home supporters, who shouted "money grabbers" at Zinedine Zidane's side as they arrived for the match.

They next host a game on Saturday against fifth-placed Real Betis, who caused a stir on social media shortly after the breakaway league was announced by issuing an 'updated' version of the Liga table without Real, Barça and Atlético.

Barça currently sit fourth on 65 with two games in hand of leaders Real and host Getafe on Thursday before Sunday's game at Villarreal, who have also lashed out at the league's three biggest sides for plotting the Super League.
