Jonathan dos Santos could miss the Nations League Finals with Mexico

Jonathan dos Santos has been struggling with injuries since the 2020 Major League Soccer regular season. That year the captain of the Los Angeles Galaxy made 13 appearances and only seven games as a starter for a total of 699 minutes. The 31-year-old even contemplated retirement at some point last year as he struggled to reach full-fitness.

‘Jona’ had a very good preseason ahead of the start of the 2021 MLS regular season, but he is still struggling with a calf injury. The Mexican international has started all 6 games the Galaxy has played this season, but has only played the full 90 minutes in three games.

Injury report ahead of the Nations League finals

Dos Santos has been struggling with a calf injury this season and this Saturday he had to be subbed out in the 53rd minute in the ‘California Clasico’ against San Jose Earthquakes for week 7 of the MLS regular season. This could affect his participation in the CONCACAF Nations League finals with the Mexico national team that are set to begin on 3 June against Costa Rica.

The veteran midfielder saw from the bench how his team secured a 1-0 victory against the Earthquakes thanks to a late goal from Samuel Grandsir, his first in MLS. After the game the Galaxy manager, Greg Vanney, was asked about the severity of his captain’s injury and he said it is something they have been dealing with this year.

“He [Jona] felt the calf tightening up and he has been dealing with cramping on his calves this season, but there is nothing so far that we have to deal with in a serious way. I don’t know if it is anything beyond the tightening up or moving the way he wanted to on the pitch. I don’t think it is anything serious, but at the moment I can’t add any more details,” he said.
