Mark McKenzie racially abused after USMNT win over Mexico
The United States defender took to social media to show how people were racially abusing him for his mistake against Mexico in the Nations League final.
Mark McKenzie made a mistake in the first minute of the game between the United States and Mexico in the final of the CONCACAF Nations League. The American defender gave the ball away, leading to Jesús ‘Tecatito’ Corona’s opening goal for ‘El Tri’ only 63 seconds after the start of the game.
McKenzie shared an example of the abuse
The player from Belgian side Genk made another mistake in the 119th minute and was whistled by the fans for a handball that led to a save from Ethan Horvath to give the USMNT the trophy. After the game people were racially abusing him on social media, so he used his Instagram account to share some of the negative comments he was subjected to.
“The amount of racial abuse and personal attacks on myself and family from ‘supporters’ and ‘non supporters’ just ain’t it,” McKenzie, who is Black, wrote on his Instagram Stories late Monday.
McKenzie joined Belgian Pro League club Genk in January from Philadelphia Union and signed a five-year-contract. The United States men’s national team defender made eight league appearances during his first season with the Belgian side and five of those were as a starter.
