Child Tax Credit for non-filers: how and when to sign up

The IRS has announced that a new online portal will allow families who do not normally file taxes to submit the information needed to get the monthly payments.

The IRS has announced that a new online portal will allow families who do not normally file taxes to submit the information needed to get the monthly payments.

The new Child Tax Credit programme is set to begin next month when the IRS begins sending the monthly payments on 15 July.

As was the case with the stimulus checks, eligibility for the federal support will largely be based on information provided in your most recent tax return. The payments will arrive automatically for most recipients but some low-income households may have to utilise the IRS’ new non-filer sign-up tool to ensure they get the payments.

What is the new Child Tax Credit non-filers’ online portal?

On Monday the IRS confirmed that they had introduced a new online tool that would allow households who do not normally file taxes to sign up for the Child Tax Credit payments. In the past there had been limits placed on the amount that non-filers can receive in the credit, but they were removed by the American Rescue Plan.

The White House has confirmed that the majority of families have already been enrolled in the programme on the basis of their returns from either of the previous two tax years. They estimate that roughly 90% of American children will be covered by the new programme.

IRS Commissioner Chuck Rettig said: “We have been working hard to begin delivering the monthly Advance Child Tax Credit to millions of families with children in July.

“This new tool will help more people easily gain access to this important credit as well as help people who don’t normally file a tax return obtain an Economic Impact Payment.”

How to access the Child Tax Credit non-filers online portal

The portal is designed for those who have not filed either a 2019 or 2020 tax return and who have not claimed a stimulus check using the non-filers tool in the past. It will allow them to submit the information needed to judge if they are eligible for the Child Tax Credit and the personal details required to make the payment.

The White House has confirmed that the following information will be required to complete the sign-up process:

  • Full name, date of birth, and Social Security numbers for you, your spouse, and your children
  • A reliable home mailing address
  • E-mail address
  • Your bank account information, if you want the payment to be made by direct deposit

The website for the IRS Non-filer Sign-up Tool is now live and will automatically determine how much your family is entitled to in the form of Child Tax Credit monthly payments. Once your details have been submitted and your eligibility is confirmed you do not need to do anything else.
