EURO 2020

Group F Euro 2020: score, standings and who progresses to round of 16

Eight goals were equally shared across the four teams on the final group day meaning that, despite the twists, it was 'as you were' in the table come full time.

Update:
Group F at Euro Cup 2021: score, standings and who progresses to round of 16

As fate would have it, the ‘Group of Death’ would be the final group to be resolved at Euro 2020 with France, Germany, and Portugal all still very much in the running to take first and second place, while group minnows Hungary still had an outside chance to qualify for the last 16 and even finish second should results go their way in both games. Ahead of matchday 3 in Group F, leaders France remained the only unbeaten side with four points after a win and draw against Germany and Hungary, respectively. A point against Portugal would guarantee that Les Bleus’ finished first or second.

Having lost to Germany in their second game following a win in their opener against Hungary, Portugal would need at least a draw to take their tally to four points, which would at the least guarantee their spot least among the top-four third-placed teams that qualify for the last 16 Germany, also on three points after defeat to France and a win over Portugal, were in a similar situation, where a point would be enough to see them through. Meanwhile Hungary, with one point, would need to defeat Der Mannschaft to finish with the four points that would guarantee their place in the last 16, be it as the second or third-placed team in Group F.

Portugal-France

Two penalties from Cristiano Ronaldo helped holders Portugal squeeze into the last 16 of the European Championship after a 2-2 draw with France in a dramatic conclusion to Euro 2020 Group F. Ronaldo edged his side in front from the penalty spot, becoming the first European in World Cup and Euros history to score a combined 20 goals across the two competitions.

France striker Karim Benzema scored twice to put his side ahead but Ronaldo equalised from the spot to become the joint top scorer in international soccer history. Germany battled back to draw 2-2 with Hungary in Munich, eliminating the Hungarians, as Portugal held on in Budapest to book a last-16 clash with Belgium on June 27 in Seville. France will face either Ukraine or Switzerland in Bucharest on June 28.

Germany-Hungary

Hungary came close to creating the biggest upset of the tournament as they led Germany 2-1 going into the final few minutes of the game thanks to goals from Szalai on 11' and Schafer on 68', who restored the underdogs' lead just a minute after Havertz had drawn Germany level.

That result would have seen Hungary through and Germany consigned to an embarrasing last place. But Hungary's big upset was not meant to be as Goretzka equalised in the 84th minute to give Der Manschaft the point that guarantee their place in the last 16.

Group F: final positions

World champions France won the group by one point from Germany in second with Portugal third, level on points with Germany.

Portugal have booked themselves a last-16 clash with Belgium on 27 June in Seville. France will face Switzerland in Bucharest on 28 June. The following day sees the Germans head to Wembley in a historically significant game against England.
