The Milwaukee Bucks are a game away from the NBA Finals after a wire-to-wire win over the Atlanta Hawks in Game 5 from Wisconsin. Brook Lopez and the entire Bucks starting 5 collectively stepped up in the absence of Giannis Antetokounmpo winning 123-112 at the Fiserv Forum.
A superstarless Game 5
Both Atlanta and Milwaukee knew they would be without their stars for Thursday’s game in Wisconsin. Despite an MRI showing no structural damage Giannis was a scratch for the game in Milwaukee. Trae Young was listed as questionable, and even warmed up before the game to test out the ankle but Atlanta’s franchise player was still in a good deal of pain in the hours leading up to tip, and he was sidelined for a second straight game.
The Bucks starters sparked Milwaukee to an explosive jump out of the gate. Jrue Holiday had seven points in the first two minutes of the game, to set the tone. The home side got good look after good look down low courtesy of a brilliant first quarter from Brook Lopez. Lopez had 12 of the Bucks 28 points in the paint in the opening 12 minutes.
Bucks jumped out early, as Hawks struggled from field
While the Bucks were nearly perfect from the field, the Hawks went on a stretch of missed 12 of 13 shots, which allowed Milwaukee trigger a 20-5 run which stretched the lead a game high 20 points.
Milwaukee took the large early lead in the first and never looked back. Atlanta continued to lurk, closing the gap to as little as six in the third quarter, but the Bucks kept the Hawks at a horns distance all night long.
Lopez leads starting 5 in Game 5
Of the 123 points Milwaukee scored in Game 5, the starters scored 111. They were led by Brook Lopez, who had a playoff career high 33 points on 14 of 18 shooting. Middleton was brilliant for the Bucks as he flirted with a triple double, posting 26 points, 13 rebounds and 8 assists. Jrue Holiday dropped 25 and dished out 13 assists, and Bobby Portis brought the energy in his first playoff start with 22 points.
The Hawks never looked as fluid on Thursday as they did against Milwaukee in Game 4 when they were without Trae Young. The slow first quarter put them in hole they weren’t able to climb out of despite 28 points from Bogdan Bogdanovic.
Bucks can clinch on Saturday night.
The Bucks are now just a win away from punching their ticket to the NBA Finals for the first time since 1974. They will get their first crack at closing out the series on Saturday as the series heads south. Game 6 from Atlanta will tip off on July 3rd at 8:30 pm ET.

Injuries have overshadowed the Eastern Conference Finals in the last two games. First is was Trae Young going down with what was eventually diagnosed a bone bruise on his ankle. Giannis Antetokounmpo then went down in the following game after hyperextending his knee on a rebound attempt.
The Hawks were without Trae Young last game in Atlanta. Despite their star scorer on the sideline they had a ten point lead over the Bucks when Giannis suffered his injury early in the third quarter. Young is listed as questionable coming into Game 5, after resting his ankle for the last three days. An MRI showed there was no structural damage found in Giannis’ knee, but he remains doubtful for Game 5 in Milwaukee.
