England face Ukraine in Rome this Saturday as favorites to qualify for the Euro 2020 semi-finals, but Ukraine, one of the positive surprises of the championship, have proved to be a dangerous opponent.

The Three Lions, who are eyeing a second successive semi-final appearance at a major tournament, kicked Germany out of the competition in the round of 16 by beating Joachim Löw’s men 2-0, while Ukraine beat Sweden in extra time.

David wants to beat Goliath

Andriy Shevchenko’s squad picked up just three points from a possible nine in Group C and now they find themselves trying to get the ticket to the semi-finals at a major tournament for the first time ever.

Sweden "helped" Ukraine to qualify to the knockout stages after beating Poland to top Group E ahead of Spain, and in the round of 16, Ukraine beat Janne Andersson's squad to advance to the quarter-finals.

It won’t be an easy task for the Ukrainians, as England's defense have gone 540 minutes without conceding a goal. But if history is anthing to go by, the favorites may not a pleasant road to the semi-finals, as all three of England's quarter-final appearances at the tournament have been decided by a penalty shootout.

England, a rock-solid defense line

After keeping a clean sheet in the round of 16, Gareth Southgate’s men followed in the footsteps of Germany in 2016 by not conceding in any of their first four European Championship matches.

The last time Ukraine and England met was back in 2013, a friendly that finished in a goalless draw. One year before they played in the European Championship and England won 1-0.
