Italy vs England: Euro 2020 final preview
Italy and England face off in Sunday’s Euro 2020 final at Wembley, with the Azzurri out to end a long wait to claim a second European title and the Three Lions aiming to lift the Henri Delaunay Trophy for the first time in their history.
Italy, who saw off Spain on penalties in the semi-finals, haven’t won the European Championship since 1968. This will be their third appearance in the final of the tournament since then, having been beaten in the fixture by France in 2000 and Spain in 2012.
Meanwhile, England are in their first ever European Championship final and will end a 55-year silverware drought if they beat Roberto Mancini’s men at Wembley. Their only major honour came when they won the World Cup back in 1966.
Gareth Southgate’s men qualified for the Euro 2020 final with a 2-1 extra-time victory over Denmark, Harry Kane grabbing the winning goal when he netted the rebound after goalkeeper Kasper Schmeichel initially saved a controversially-awarded penalty.
Restrictions on travel to the UK mean the overwhelming majority of the more than 60,000 fans in Wembley will be English, although a group of 1,000 fans are to be shuttled over from Italy for the match. They will be flown in and out of London on Sunday, remaining in a bubble throughout their time in the city and quarantining on their return home.
